False neutral between 4th and 5th
08/12/15 at 18:33:20

If I don't up the shift lever hard enough going from 4th to 5th, I can get a neutral. Is this normal? I've learned not to hit it, but?

Is the shift linkage bolt tight at the engine shaft?  Have you taken apart the shift lever at the front and cleaned and greased the bushings?

Nope, definitely not normal. It should engage smoothly.

Rolavine,

How fast are you going when you attempt your shift from 4th to 5th gear?

yes, there is but you have to be trying or too timid in shifting to get it.

So, you say yes and others say no.
You seem to be the technical wizard on these beasts, so thanks.
I've already learned to shift a bit harder going to 5th and it never does it then.

I have not Done as Dave Suggested but it sounds easy enough, I'll do it, and examine the shift linkage while I'm at it.

Kenny, I'm going about 40 to 50 when I make that shift.

Thanks for the help, I'm not going to worry about it.

Rolavine,

I notice on my bike that the faster I am going the easier the shift is from 4th to 5th gear. After 50 MPH it is butter smooth and I cannot feel the space or neutral between the gears.

I think it's something most people go thru.
You know stomping on it will getRdone at a price of bent dogs.
So what's the gentlest I can do it.
Then you know what's too gentle and what's just right.

Quick and firm, no sledgehammer needed,
I ran through the gears, from second to fifth and back down countless times without even touching the clutch. Just using the gas and ankle , timed right..
The jump between first and second is too big to do clutchless.

Over time you learn what your bike likes...and doesn't like.

Over the last couple of years I have begun to have a feel for the location of neutral......and my foot can tell when the shift I just made from 2nd gear down has stopped at neutral. I then can just let out the clutch and put my foot down to wait for my turn to go.

I have also developed a feel for what to do with the throttle while shifting or decelerating to keep the engine from backfiring....keeping the throttle open just a tad will stop most of the noise.  And at those really quick stops I can keep the engine from stalling if I can remember to roll on the throttle a little bit while pulling in the clutch lever and getting on the brakes hard.....and maybe even pushing the horn button at the same time!

noob rider here - I too find the shift from 4th to 5th difficult on my S40. All other gear shifts (up and down) are fine, but that one shift can be problematic for me. It seems easier the higher my speed is, but sometimes I just don't seem to be able to get her up to 5th...

So, what went through your mind while using the phrase, "get her up"?

If your technique is a little wonkie, there'll be little hitches all throughout the pattern.  Almost like it's not cooperating.  but stroke her the right way...

best shift technique for me is a little up pressure before squeezing the lever.
a little squeeze and drop the throttle, the lever will jump into the next gear w/out fighting it.
