Securing the tool cover
08/10/15 at 16:34:28

My Savage was missing a few pieces when I bought her, including the toolbox cover, which IMO, looks like hell and makes me nervous about water shorting out the battery at bathtime.

I now have a replacement hook and a cover. The lock for the cover is shot, but it does turn with a screwdriver.

I can't seem to get the top of the cover secured, so even with the "lock" engaged, a little wiggling takes the cover right off.  I've looked at the parts diagram and I think the only piece missing (other than tools) is the moulding, but I doubt that plays any significant role in securing the cover.

What's missing?  Or should I just put double sided tape on the top?

The molding is an over-the-edge molding and probably adds about a 16th to the installed depth.  Is anything bent? Make sure the 2 little catches at the top are engaged well. Mine still moves around with the molding and everything in place but it doesn't come off.

I never really messed with it once I put the battery box back in the bike when I got it and everything fit back on.

By George, I think you're right!  I believe I'm missing the battery cover. Many thanks!

This is what it's supposed to look like...up close Smiley

Btw, your battery wont short out due to water splashing on it. It's hooked into a system that has a MUCH higher conductivity(lower resistance) than water does (water isnt actually a very good conductor).
You could submerge that bike and the headlight would stay on for quite a while Smiley

or you can use a piece of sheet metal across the top
and bend down the hooks a little to secure it better than stock.

Try flipping this 180 degrees.  It won't lock properly if it isn't oriented correctly.

Verslagen - Good idea, if I had any confidence in my abilities I would give that a go.

Chzeckmate - D'oh!  I could have sworn it was a "T" in the exploded diagram.  I'll give that a shot.

Hey Boogie with Stu, I like how you relocated the rectifier in that pic. Any problems with it overheating or anything and are you still using the stock tool cover?
