Posts: 120	Will installing a raptor change the idle speed? 08/07/15 at 15:31:23 I plan on adding a raptor fuel petcock and replacing the original petcock. Since the original petcock has a hose coming from the carburetor that will be plugged when the raptor is installed, I am wondering if this might change the idle speed? Thanks for your thoughts. Ron G

Follow the instructions and block the vacuum out let on the carb where it was connected to the original petcock.

If the original vacuum petcock didn't have a hole in the diaphragm, and if the vacuum hose was in good shape and not providing an air leak, and if the original vacuum petcock was providing a proper fuel flow at idle and keep the float bowl level at the proper height....then changing to the Raptor petcock won't change the idle speed.

If the vacuum petcock was leaking air, leaking fuel, or not keeping the float bowl properly filled.....then the idle speed could change when the Raptor is installed.

It will only affect the idle speed, if the petcock or vac line was bad...

The two things I noticed with the Raptor (and the BBS members can chime in):

1. The Raptor intake tube is lower than the factory, which means you'll get more miles out of a tank, but a smaller reserve capacity. So don't plan on riding as far on reserve.

2. Not sure why, but it seems that when switching to reserve it takes a bit longer for the fuel to reach the carb. With the factory setup, when I ran out of gas it seemed to stop sputtering sooner after switching to reserve. With the raptor, I pretty much switch to reserve the instant I think I feel a sputter.

The Raptor's screen area is smaller than the stock vacuum petcock's, yet it seems to flow better. Go figure.

I ditched the stock petcock for a Raptor after the bike had sat neglected and un-mothballed for years. It was probably gummed and varnished internally among other things. It was definitely starving the float bowl. The result of the swap-out was like an instant makeover. I then reset the idle speed and idle mix screw anyway on general principles.

Reading this board you learn that the stock petcock can produce such a variety of head scratching failure modes that it's hardly worth wondering about. Just into the trash with it and enjoy the loss of many potential problems.
