How do you lift the front tire off of the ground.
07/23/15 at 12:17:36
I may have just missed it on this website but ...
On the website it shows how to lift the rear tire off the ground using home made jacks. But I wasn't able to find anything on how to lift the front tire off the ground.
Is there a place on the website showing how to lift the front tire off the ground? ... Either using a home made jack or some other method?
Thanks,
Ron G

If you don't own a floor jack or bike lift....you can place the bottom of the frame up near the footpegs (bottom of engine) on an old milk crate. You can also lean the bike over onto the kick stand and prop something under the frame in a pinch......but that always makes me nervous to have so much weight on the kickstand.

If you made a lift like this...
reverse the direction of the lift and the front goes up.

For some reason, my bike always lifts with the front wheel off the ground. I have to put the el-cheapo wooden jack I built waaayy toward the back of the frame basket to get the rear wheel up. Did that before I added the bags which are featherweight anyway.
Is it OK to lift the bike using the flat piece behind the frame? The one with the holes or slots in it.

Blog
and
You can see how easy it went up. Rear takes a bit more to stake down the front end to lift the rear.

Dave, Verslagen, If I'm understanding this correctly, by placing the home-made jack towards the rear of the bike (while still under the frame) it will lift the rear tire. ... Where as if I place the home-made jack far forward to the front of the bike (under the front bottom part of the engine), it should lift the front tire. ... ? Have I understood it correctly?
Also, Tocsik has asked the same question that I was wondering. Right in front of the rear wheel is the frame that holds the emmissions charcoal canister (for my California model). This frame is not the regular bike frame, but wondered if anyone has lifted the bike using this frame as a support?
And Paladin, in your method, it looks like you had to hold down the front end to get the back wheel to come up?
Thanks a lot for your help,
Ron G

I think the plate you're talking about is the exhuast bracket on non cali bikes: it's where I always jack mine up for a tire swap
it'a also where the thing hung up unloading it from a pickup by myself

Don't remember. Mostly that once your front wheel/forks/bars/etc. staked down so it cannot move -- the rest of the bike and rear wheel
cannot
fall over.
I have had bikes fall over before....

Remember, there's a right way and a rong way.
I tied to the front end and used a come along over a crafter in the shop.

Put a concrete block with a piece of plywood on top behind the wheel, in front of the engine. Straddle wheel. Grab each fork leg and lift. When lifted, pull bike forward so block is under engine. Sit bike on block. That's how I've done the front end for years.

Touch over 400 wet, still, lifting the front or rear is pretty easy

This:
I never had a stand fail or a bike fall doing this but on the other hand there are bikes I would never consider doing it with. You can lift the front or rear wheel of a dirt bike like this but I'd only lift the front of the Savage.

I've been using jack stands under the front pegs to lift the front.
How? put jack stand under right peg, place another in front of left peg, grab handlebar and level bike, use foot to scoot jack stand under the top mounting bolt for the left peg. Ends up pretty level.
