Hand held non contact tachometer

Have just come across a 'mini hand held non contact tachometer" on eBay in the UK:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-LCD-Handheld-Non-Contact-Digital-Photo-Tachome...

Only £10, (approx $15). Just wondered if anyone had used one to check the idle speed before.

Not particularly useful for me at the moment as my bike has decided not to start  Angry  but that's another story!

since the savage doesn't have a prop, it's gonna be hard to use.

Didn't know how these things worked. So if it's only useful if you have a drive shaft I won't be investing in one.

You can get these kind of things and use them pretty easily, and they are affordable.  You just have to wrap the sensor wire around the spark plug wire a few times....then read the rpm.  You don't have to mount it permanently if you don't want to - or you can just use some 2 sided foam tape and mount it on the frame somewhere and it will also keep track of the hours.  I had one on my trials bike to keep track of hours for oil changes.

The non-contact thing has to have a light variation to "see" the rotation.
I've seen people with RC cars paint half the flywheel white and the other half black so it can "see" the difference.

If it's for an airplane, you won't be able to set it for single pulse per rotation.  It'll only read half as fast unless you make a stripe of some sort on opposite sides for it to see. Then set for 2-blade prop. I can't think of anywhere on a savage that you could get to crank rotation without losing your oil so it'll never work.
