question about drive belt noise
07/20/15 at 18:35:05
I'm getting close to completing a RYCA build and seem to have most of the bugs and rattles worked out. The info on this forum has been invaluable ... thanks everyone. I still have a list of things to finish but I'm having too much fun riding right now to spend too much time in the shop.
The question is .... with the bike not running and in neutral, will the drive belt make a clicking noise when you roll it forward? The bike is silent when you roll it backwards so I'm wondering if it should sound the same going both ways?
The bike is an 1988 with 9,000 miles on it (pic attached I think).

My bike tends to make a noise going backwards but not forwards. I think it's normal because of how the teeth wear.
To be safe, check your belt tension.

If it doesn't squeal when you ride, that is what matters.
The belt twist, you're up to speed on that?

Thanks, I'm up to speed on the belt twist....and when I adjusted the belt the noise got a bit quieter. I'm not getting any squeal while riding.

I had the belt off when I built the bike. This is my first belt drive bike, but it looked to be in good shape, no teeth missing.

I'm still chewing on the idea that it's maybe a bad idea to run it, turn it around, run it,
I'm wondering if the torque doesn't
Set

If this guys belt fails in a few thousand miles...

The belt on the RYCA CAFE' should be looser than when the bike was stock. The RYCA uses longer shocks, which results in the swing arm no longer being parallel with the ground.....so as the shock compress the belt will be tightened as the swing arm angles closer to level.
If you are using the belt twist method for adjustment....make it an easy twist and not the "white fingernail" pressure that is recommend for the stock bike. With the bike on the sidestand or on a jack.....the belt should be easy to twist or move up/down a bit.

If you ride that thing pretty hard, accelerating out of corners and stress the belt good, I wish you would. If it dies, a straight across death, like the recent failure, I'd say

Thanks Dave! (And to and the rest of the group on SS.com), I loosened the belt a fraction more and the noise disappeared.

The tool won't work on a RYCA......the swing arm is not in the same alignment as it was on the stock bike.
