How long does a carb cleaning take. Could I remove it night before and clean it in the morning put it back together and have it running by afternoon someday perhaps a weekend?

I guess it depends on your experience and capability. I can have a (single) carb off almost any bike, cleaned, back on and adjusted in about an hour. But I'm experienced (and good  Wink ).

If this is your first time with this type of procedure it could take you 2x or more.

BTW, cleaning is not a soaking exercise, rather a rub-n-scrub one. Once the carb is off the bike the procedure you will remove the bowl and slide. From there you will use carb cleaner and brushes/wires to dislodge any gum/gunk in the jets and passageways.

Use safety glasses, gloves and a turkey pan (to contain the mess and any parts that want to run away from you). The number one problem people have with carb cleaning is getting the screws removed from the bowl and slide. Use a JIS srewdriver and you'll be good to go. I ALWAYS replace those JIS screws with hex bolts.

Also do I need to buy a kit or anything before or can I just take what I have clean it and reinstall? I've heard of doing a "bath" which means submerge entire carb in carb cleaner and spraying it out with compressed air, what is that about? I'm thinking of cleaning it today if it will only take an hour or two to clean

Well last night I did remove the bowl so it shouldn't be a problem today. I'm mechanically inclined so I assume it won't be nooby to me. I've cleaned nitro engines before carbs and all. I know its very different but still. Alright I'll clean the carb later  and put it back on and hopefully my top end starvation issue will go away

I like the idea of hex bolts on the bottom of the bowl, what thread size and length are they?

Got the carb cleaner and the tools and seat off now its time to dig in. I'll let the parts soak in the cleaner then spray them out with either computer air duster or my father's air conpressor

Well got the carb off went to take the slide top cover off stripped a screw. Well I disregarded the black slide and just cleaned the bowl and jets. I think I found my problem it was the jet by the fuel line (don't know which one) it was all clogged in the little screen there were tiny hairs all kinds of crap. Cleaned all jets with carb cleaner and boy is there a difference. It doesn't hesitate as I accelerate hard like I used to. Shifted Into third at basically 45 where I usually so it at 38-40 because it popped. NO popping or hesitation. Can't wait to test it out on the highway on the top top end of speeds to see if it can maintain highway speeds easier as the fuel jet is all clear. That's was he problem it was starving for fuel

I note that Gary in NJ said to scrub the parts with a brush.

I used the term "rub-n-scrub" to make the point that simply putting the carb in a jar of cleaner wouldn't solve the issue of clogged jets and carb orifices. In order to clean a carb you need to make contact with the stuff that's clogging things up. Of course, if you have an ultra-sonic cleaner, an overnight bath will due the trick.

I directly sprayed al the gunk off the jets then resprayed with carb cleaner with the little straw. It runs better now a lot so if it worked it worked
