Taking off smog devices from Savage 650 (Read 75 times)

Posts: 7	Taking off smog devices from Savage 650 07/19/15 at 22:27:09 I bought a California Savage 650 that has all the smog stuff on it and shipped it to Maui. My mechanic says it will run better without all the California smog stuff on it. What do you think? Is it a big deal (Labor and money) to get rid of it?

Got tools? Service manual? Did he quote a price? For all I know it's just the evap container.. the engine is not spinning any pumps. Some hints about you, your experience, time,miles on the bike. Year model, miles on the odometer.

The canister is just a filter that takes fumes from the fuel tank and send them to the engine intake to be burned. Removing it won't make any difference in how the bike runs......but will save you a couple of pounds of weight.

If you remove it you will have to install a vent hose where the current hose attaches to the fuel tank......just run it down to the bottom of the bike behind the engine.

The only horsepower it eats is what it takes to haul it. So, whoever your mechanic is, before you do anything, especially Pay to get something done, run it by this bunch first.
In case I missed it, basic information about the bike is important for us.
Year model, miles, any mods.

Unless it gets plugged, then it can cause problems, or at least it will on other bikes that have them
I haven't heard of a Savage having issues yet, but the California models of the Rebel with the charcoal cannister tend to develop problems once it gets plugged up, and so do the Ninja 500s so equipped

The epa hardware amount to the carbon canister.
hardly worth the effort to remove unless you're planning on some mod's.
other than that, rejetting will improve performance and doesn't require removing the epa stuff.

unless you can't twist a wrench to save you life, wouldn't recommend paying to get it done. we've outlined the steps and will help you understand what you need to do.
