idle fluctuates
07/09/15 at 16:18:28

My bike is an 05,6500 mi.It has a raptor petcock. It runs strong but the idle reads lower sometimes and higher at others.I have it set so most of the time its 1350 rpm ,but sometimes it s 1500 and sometimes if I am coasting to a stop it stalls .i think the idle drops. It starts right back up,and then will run fine for a long time.If I rev it while i'm slowing down its fine. What do you think the problem is?Thanks!

Pull your petcock and and check the filters.

Beyond that, maybe jets are starting to clog?

Possible vacuum leak.  I'd check that first.  It would be helpful to know more specifics about your bike.  Do you have an aftermarket muffler, jets, etc.?

a good carb cleaning would be the 1st step.

sometimes it's the TEV sometimes other things.

check your float height.

stalling after suddenly cutting it after a long run is also a known issue.

I have a new rubber cap on the vacuum port from the old petcock on the  carb. Are there any other vacuum lines on the bike ?The muffler is stock.I was told by the previous owner when I bought the bike 6 years ago that the carb had been jetted. I'm not sure what that meant. Thanks!

Check out this youtube video for how to check for vacuum leaks.  This is how I'd start diagnosing.  This is so simple and just takes a minute.  If you find a vacuum leak then you can just fix it.  If you don't have a vacuum leak you can scratch that off the list and continue diagnosing.  If it's not a vac leak then I'd suspect a carb issue and give it a thorough cleaning as suggested above.
