There's a speed chart somewhere on the forum, based on gearing, that shows 94mph in fourth IIRC, or 97 on a 4 speed bike (supposedly a 140/90 on a 5 speed bike make the 4 speed bike top speed attainable in fourth on a 5 speed bike) and 107 in 5th
I seriously doubt mine will hit 94 in 5th at stock HP levels, so I'm fairly sure that 4th would get me a higher top speed than 5th with engine stock, though I could be wrong
put some more power in it, and fith will be faster than 4th, most likely

This issue with going fast......is that the stock bike is only around 30 hp has a limit on how fast it can go.  Once the wind and mechanical drag exceeds the power that the engine can produce.....it just won't go any faster.  Going higher in gearing tends to slow the engine rpm down, and can actually reduce the top speed you will achieve if the engine rpm x torque isn't high enough to push the wind out of the way.  The bike needs to get up around 6,500 rpm for maximum power and speed....you will have to pick a gear (4th or 5th) that gets you closest to 6,500 at your top speed.

If you add saddlebags, a windshield or you are tall or wide......your top speed will be reduced....small, light, narrow, short will all help obtain a higher top speed.  (A 40 mph tail wind will also help!).

I'm pretty sure that the LS-650 isn't about either of those.

I've had the Purple S40 up to 103-5 mph indicated a couple of times.
The engine was completely stock except for a dyna muffler and jetted stock carb.  This is the most powerful stock bike I've ridden.  I think it just happened to come off the assembly line with all the correct tolerances in the engine, like a Blue Printed engine.

I've had REX to 105 mph as measured on the Veypor computer, which is accurate.  Most of the time it would get to 98-100.
He was modified, engine & a bit larger rear wheel, as well as chain for a bit more on the gearing.
I think at the time of the 105 I had the Edelbrock carb on it.
It seemed to really like that carburetor.

I think the right windscreen will actually help.  I have mine set at about 135° and it creates a good laminar bubble around me and the deflection angle is better than I would get riding tucked.  I have no scientific data to support what I'm saying but I can tell you that my own riding experience is I'm getting better numbers with the shield.  My gas mileage is also improved with the shield, lending some credibility to my assertion.  There are a lot of factors that could lead to that, though. So, until I have more hard proof, an assertion is all it is.  I'd love to hear some more thoughts on it though.

92mph with no windshield and me spooning the tank.
80mph with the tall windshield and me sitting up straight like a gentleman. It could have gone faster, but, with the large shield at those speeds, the bike tends to bounce around in the wind, which my signal roll off and coast back down to a comfortable 45mph.

(Over the years I learned  that my most comfortable speed can be calculated by taking 100 and subtracting my age. I was a wild baby).

83 going down a 9% grade on I-87.... Of course, I wouldn't try it again because at the bottom of that hill theres always a Trooper sitting in the median. Go figure... Also, I just rebuilt the top end... My Bolt on the other hand has been topped out at 105.... and thats before the Vance & Hines full exhaust and VO2 air intake.  I love my Savage, but man that Bolt is torque!!! Wink

I think you're right, as long as it's a small screen and you tuck behind it, though I have no data to back that up
