motor blown
05/27/15 at 22:22:31

My son 's bike blew the engine, ( or so the shop says).  He was driving it and it made a terrible sound.

I've never taken a motor apart, let alone try to fix one.  Is it a futile effort to at least see if I can find out what is wrong?

If I was able to get a replacement motor are they difficult to swap?

Swap's not bad...
Rebuild,... takes some machining, and will cost...

Where are you located?...
Is English your first language?...
Your location tells us a lot about parts availability..  and how we can help...

Yes. More than likely you will just cause more damage. An "engine" (a motor is an electrical device) swap is more in line with the skill sets of the average person, but even then you'll need basic understanding of mechanics and a good tools set including torque wrenches.

The Savage is a good bike for "First Timers", and generally the mechanical training starts with maintenance items like oil and filter changes, brake adjustments, brake pad changes, valve adjustments, replacing the petcock....fixing headlight rattles, etc.

Rebuilding an engine is not really something that I would suggest for a mechanical beginner, and even doing an engine swap is an advanced exercise for a novice.  It involves taking off and replacing the seat/fuel tank/carb/exhaust/electrical/battery box/drive belt/footpegs......and then getting them back in the correct order.  To make it even more challenging most used engines come with some of the parts stripped off (starter, stator, drive pulley, etc.)  and you may have to do some engine work prior to bolting it back into the bike .

I am not suggesting that you give up on "helping" or getting help to make this a running bike again.  Once we know where you live we may be able to get you some help.

Do you have any indication what happened to make the noise?  The cam chain tensioner can overextend and result in a crunch on a bike with 10,000 - 20,000 miles showing on the odometer.  The other internal parts can crunch if the bike was run low on oil.

What year, miles, any maintenance you're aware of.
Drain oil, run a magnet through it, look for aluminum, too.
Depending on damage, a used engine is a good idea.
In fact, if you CAN salvage the engine, then slap a used one in,
Build up the currently shafted one, swap it in, sell the used one..
You get to ride AND learn all the ins and outs of the guts of it,
Hop it up, great workbench project for the off season.

We aren't helping the guy any more.

How did the motor die, anyway?
Pretty rare event.

'blew the engine" isn't much of a diagnoses. Did the shop say what they thought might have happened ?

Making a "terrible sound" is probably not good news, but if it was my bike I think I'd invest the time to at least pull the side covers off and and take a look, and do a compression check, before I decided on a course of action.

If the engine is trashed there is an other choice besides rebuilding or replacing it. Depending on the age and overall condition of the bike, it might make more sense from a financial standpoint to just cut your losses and get another motorcycle. These bikes, especially older ones, aren't worth all that much. The cost of an engine swap or a rebuild might very well exceed the value of the bike. You might be able to recoup some of your loss by selling the usable parts of the bike, either on this forum, or on ebay or craigslist. You'll be surprised how expensive some of the parts for these things are if you buy them new. There is a substantial demand for used parts. I'm not necessarily advocating this as the route to take but it's something to consider.

It's a big enough hassle to join a forum for the reason of joining, swapping information,
But do all that just to see how many people will try to help?
I guess it takes all kinds.
