strange noise
05/22/15 at 07:48:38

Hey guys. Hoping everyone can give me an idea if what's happening here with my vague description.lol I've got a 2003 savage, nearly stock. The only aftermarket parts are a windshield,  the oem engine guard, skeleton hand mirrors,  saddlebags,  a tool bag on the handlebars,  a pigtail adapter, and a drivers backrest. It's got a little over 5400 miles now. I've been noticing that when I am accelerating there is a strange noise. It only happens on acceleration from 1st through 3rd gear and it's like a vibrating low pitched whistle, is about the best way to describe it. It's low enough it gets drowned out by the muffler once it gets going and it doesn't do it at all when idling or when in higher gears. If I give it any gas when idling it makes the sound though. Any ideas?

3 things to check...
Headlight bezel, speedo housing, and belt... check the headlight by taping it temporarily,.. speedo by hand,..
...and belt check is up for opinion... Grin... (okay, it's not the belt)...

Could it possibly be the muffler going bad?  Sound like a VW bug?

Check what's been said first.  You'll probably find it.

Last one was my first thought, but grabbing the Speedo and then the headlight, not nearly as painful

Thank you all for the replys. Pretty sure it's the speedo. I kinda grabbed and twisted at it as I was riding and didn't seem to notice the noise for a minute or two. I was worried thinking it could have been a cam chain noise or something major! Relieved it's just the speedo and it isn't too bothersome. Just wanted to be sure i wasn't about to lose my ride
