Gender:	Raptor leaking 05/21/15 at 20:35:01 Put a shot of gas in the tank to check the new raptor, and sure enough it leaks. Not much, but enough to scare the landlord if he sees it. The gasket with this unit looks very thin. If I really squeeze it down, will that hurt or help? Sealant? Thanks. ps: by 'gasket' I mean the thin rubber perimeter seal!

I scraped the tank bare and brushed on Aviation Gasket Cement before I put the new one on.

I usually use a dry lube on gaskets like the one used on the Raptor petcock. Any kind of lubrication will keep the gasket from "bunching" when you tighten the bolts down. And, as Flint mentioned make sure everything is clean. Kenny G

RTV and most gasket makers are not gasoline/fuel proof. As a test once I put a small hole in a soda bottle and covered it with the RTV gasked material and let it cure overnight. The next day when I put gas in the bottle, the RTV was leaking within 30 minutes.

I also found another product at my local auto parts store but I can't remember who made it ........you need one that is gasoline/fuel proof. Be careful not to get one that is a "repair" for fuel tanks....as it most likely will be an epoxy and permanently attach the petcock to the tank.

Make sure the oring is sticking up out of the groove in the petcock and inspect the mating surfaces. No goo should be needed.

Agreed, a clean, flat mating surface should be the only requirement

That's the only "goo" I trust to be 100% fuel proof. I needed to make a couple new cork washers for the fuel tap bolts to get mine stop leaking.

clean the tank surface - no bumps or flakes allowed.

I ALWAYS dress gaskets (overkill, yes, but I used to be a british bike owner who hated oil leaks).

For FUEL, I used Hylomar - now its OWN brand, not sold by permatex. However, permatex now sells a Hylomar "clone". see: Permatex 85420 Permashield Fuel Resistant Gasket Dressing & Sealant, 2 oz Tube

blue, tacky, non hardening goo. use very little.
