Emgo Shorty Muffler - good performance possible?
05/19/15 at 13:13:51
I've got an Emgo shorty muffler sitting on the shelf at the moment and before I go to the hassle of fitting it, wondered if it is actually possible to get good performance with the Savage and this type of muffler?
Not worried about decibel concerns just how it would compare performance wise to the Dyna muffler, which I used to have. Happy to rejet and all that.

Yes it's straight through.
Has baffle/mesh that allows exhaust to go into the larger section.

You will get a smoother running and easier to jet the carb with a muffler that is not straight through. The energy waves/pulses can bounce back and forth through the straight pipe and result in power loss at rpm's where the frequency is out of phase with the exhaust stroke.

I got the same muffler on right now, it's loud as hell but it seems to work well, some backfiring is a given with that one... Wish it was more restricted.

I tried a 22" Cone that was a "straight through". I replaced it because the motor was getting too hot and it was too loud for me. With the 27" (baffled) Emgo the bike runs cooler and without a perceived loss of performance.

According to the SUZUKI S40 / SAVAGE TUNING GUIDE (Lancer?) it says the ideal pipe length is 30":
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-ng_s9DeJ14AJ7IUsuNeOqf9ZvqDE7o3Z3a_xEiHH2
This is where 30" sits if you do a scrambler pipe:
With this in mind I wanted to have the muffler end before it gets to the rear shock. Ryca take the pipe beyond the shock and then add the muffler. I don't really like the look of this solution, but also isn't this too long a pipe for best tuning in theory? The tuning guide says over 32" is no good, yet the Ryca solution is about 50".
I was thinking today I might cut the shorty muffler open and and plug the straight through section a bit like Gyrobob's diagram?:
