Tachometer Wiring
05/06/15 at 09:25:31

I am trying to wire a Ryca Tachometer to my 2013 S40.

How can I tell which terminal on the coil is negative?

I have a cheap multi meter but I have never used it before.

Which wire terminal on the horn is hot?

On the Savage....red is hot before the ignition switch, orange is hot after the switch.  Orange with a stripe goes through a switch and will only have power if the switch is on.  Other colors indicate the power being distributed to lights, ign. etc.

For the coil the orange/white is the power....the black/yellow is from the ignition module and is what the tach should be connected to.

Here is a link to the wiring diagrams so you can search the colors and what they do.

Dave,

Thank You Very Much!

I had everything hooked up as you posted.

I will turn the power on and start it up.

Everything works as advertised.

Rule of thumb:

Any wire with a white tracer comes out of a switch.   Wink

KennyG:

Here's the link to my post on installing the RYCA tach on a stock S40.
It has a picture showing the tach wires connected to the coil.

Todd,

I did see your post quite awhile ago and couldn't find it when I was looking for it this morning.

Now I saved your wiring pic.

I really admire the bracket that you made to hold the tachometer.

Thanks, Kenny

I like working with aluminum stock from the hardware store because it
doesn't require special tools or machinery to make a lot of things.
A hacksaw, drill, and a file will suffice for small projects.
You can even polish it to a mirror finish if the job calls for that.
