cam chain tensioner arm replacement
05/04/15 at 21:29:22

Apparently the noise was not just my cam chain tensioner adjuster, but cam chain tensioner arm is broke. My Clymer is not very clear on removal and replace. Can I replace the cam chain tensioner arm from the bottom of case or will I have to remove the head? Help my wife is ready to ride!!! Thanks in advance!!!

Moves vertically, not just forward and backward. When it broke, the force actually removed a small piece of aluminum. The tension adjuster was pointing up in about a 2 o'clock position instead  pointing down in the 4 o'clock position. For reference, page79,figure 36, upper right  piece that looks like a sideways J, is where the end of the tensioner adjuster plunger end hit and remained wedged. Hope that helps!!!

Clymer manual m384 with Ryca bobber on the cover, page 79, figure 36. The tension adjuster plunger is pointing to the 4 o'clock position. Above the end of the plunger is a piece of aluminum shaped like a sideways J. That is where the end of the tensioner adjuster plunger was jammed. It hit that sideways J hard enough to remove a piece!!!!

from what you describe (how about some pictures)
either the guide has come loose at the top or broken in the middle.

You can replace the rear guide w/out completely taking the top off, but it'll take some luck.

Back to my original question, can I replace the cam chain tensioner arm by taking the head off, if so, can I do it without removing engine from the frame, or do I have to remove the cylinder?

Yes

No

And as I said earlier, you might be able to replace the rear guide w/out removing the top.  Just takes a bit of luck.
