This morning I fired up the bike with the choke on...lot's of white smoke appeared at the exhaust...choke was only on for maybe 10 seconds...the bike warmed up, the smoking stopped and I headed to work.

The smoke was only there for maybe 20 seconds but it's the first time I can remember it ever smoking like that.

The previous day I had filled up with gas. That was the only thing that was different.

Should I be concerned?

The white smoke is generally condensation, and when the exhaust system and engine are cold it is common....and outdoor temperature and humidity have an affect on the issue.

Too much fuel tends to make black smoke, oil tends to make blue smoke.

Okay, now I'm paranoid...
This morning the same thing happened...now I'm wondering if the smoke has more of a blue tint to it...
If so, I'm thinking the rings may need replacement?

Curious, because it just started out of the blue (no pun intended).

Compression test in order? But I have no baseline to compare to since I've never checked compression on this bike.

Hold a hand mirror behind the bike...in the smoke so that the smoke runs across the mirror.

Water vapor will make water droplets on the mirror and they will evaporate and leave very little behind. Oil will leave a greasy film behind....

If your bike isn't burning oil....I wouldn't worry too much about a rebuild as it is a lot of work....and riding weather is here. No reason to tear a bike apart just because it smokes a bit when you start it.

Another thing to try, and this should be easy to do in Colorado. Under extended period of coasting and high engine vacuum, bad rings or valve seals will allow oil to flow into the engine. So when you coast down a long hill and then apply throttle at the bottom of the hill.....watch to see if the engine smokes for a few seconds as the oil is burned away. If this doesn't happen...the rings and valve seals are probably OK.

I'm not sure, but I don't think so, there's a tickle at the back of my brain saying two letter name (like BMW is a three letter name) but I could be wrong
I think it was German or at least a German / dutch speaking country
this was in the early 80s, and it was already an 'old' bike, no longer in production
