crank on TDC, cam marks inline with the top of the head.
pics in the tech section threads, key words head plug, cam chain.

yes, that's all there's to it.   Cool

Here you go. I just got done putting my engine back together a few weeks ago. Just make sure you're at top dead center (TDC).

Thank you. Exactly what I've been looking for. I see what the bottom picture is showing with the camshaft, but what exactly is the top picture showing? Am I looking for a TDC stamp on a gear or pulley in there?

The gear tooth pointing straight up has a punch mark on it. See how it's lined up with the pointer arrow thing just below the case screw, hanging down? Those two lined up should place it at TDC. The camshaft, those two lines scribed across the camshaft line up with the flats on the bearing half. The cam should be hanging with lobes down, otherwise the timing would be 180 degrees out. Hope that makes sense?
Just to be sure, you can stick a piece of wire or something down the plug hole, rotate the engine til the piston pushes the wire all the way up and before it starts going back down again. Then you are in the TDC ballpark. Good luck mate.

The big gear under the left side crank case cover. If you look in this photo on the far left, you'll see a line with a T next to it on the gear and a sort of point coming down from the top of the crank case. The picture shows what it should look like at TDC. After this is aligned,  the camshaft index marks are next. The camshaft lobes should be facing downward and the marks should be horizontal as in the picture earlier.

WARNING: If you do take the left side crank case cover off, be careful that the washers in this picture so not fall off. If they do, the picture shows where they go. One on each side of the gear that says it should have washers. Just trying to save you a trip back in once you get it together.

I almost forgot, turn the big gear counter clock wise to get it to line up on TDC. I believe the bolt in the center of that gear is 17mm.

If you don't already have the stator cover off, the timing mark visible thru the port is sufficient.

Ok....so I have the entire savage back together. Did everything as directed with the cam chain/timing. Fueled it up, started it.....AND IT FIRED RIGHT UP!!!!!!!! It idled just fine like it always did!!! Does. This mean I'm in the clear and got the timing right? Just wann make sure before I go shifting gears or anything really other than an idle. Also,  I filled the oil up to the top notch next to the window, started it and it seeme like the oil didn't drain back down any once I had shut it off for several minutes. No visible leaks ANYWHHERE in the outsider if engine around the new seals, and none around that pesky rubber head plug. Does it take more oil to fill it after having the engine completely tore down? Also a little bit of. Smoke coming off the head...which I believe to be residue from a degreaser formula I had used for light scrubbing burning off the engine..Pictures coming soon
