I would. I'd want as much stud in the jug as possible without bottoming. Just a hair off bottom would be what I'd go for. Some thread lock, done deal.

Kris,

Installing studs in the head is something that should really be done for anyone planning to ride one of these critters for any length of time.

With studs, Never-Seize, and lock nuts the exhaust system should last the life of the bike.

The muffler life is always uncertain.

I am of the opinion that when you see the header on an exhaust system that has double walled pipe turn blue there is probably a leak in the inside pipe.

I know you are not supposed to wax chrome exhaust pipes, but I have been waxing exhaust pipes, including the S40, with Johnsons Paste Wax ever since I started riding and have had very little to no bluing on pipes.

Does the wax not burn off very quickly?

The upper few inches of my header has turned a straw color. I don't ride very aggressively. It's called a "cruiser" for a reason!  Wink

I think abuse (not really the proper word) causes most of the bluing.

Kris,

I wax the exhaust system very often when I first get a motorcycle.

I don't think it all burns off by the way the water beads when I wash the bike.

I wax the header and muffler again every time I wash or clean the bike.

I am sure I no longer ride in a very aggressive manor. We will see what the pipe looks like after the temperature gets up to 112 degrees here in North Texas.

I had a Honda VLX, that was liquid cooled, that I mostly rode when the weather was extremely hot, I am sure I will miss it.

Kris, I forget exactly where in TN you are, but I can get the right exhaust studs (stainless) and the right lock nuts (brass) locally. Treat the Savage/S40 exhaust system as if it were as delicate as the one on a 1930s-1960s Mopar L6. If you can get marine grade silicon-bronze metric fasteners, use them, they don't gall the case threads and they rarely, if ever, have corrosion issues. Barring that, use aircraft grade hardened stainless steel fasteners. Anything else is a waste of money, unless you are rich enough to buy titanium fasteners.

Oh, and on a large bore single (or V twin) safety wire is your bestest buddy...  Wink

I was thinking safety wire since a lock nut insert would just melt.

Kris,

Safety wire is always good.

I admit that Nylock nuts will melt when used on exhaust systems.

There are several all metallic styles of lock nuts available.

Are you referring to the ones with the oblong hole?

Kris,

See links below:

This is the one that I like for exhaust systems;

I like the ones like this for everyday jobs;

For the really tough jobs with a lot of vibration I like these;

For the bikes that sit outside in the weather, or under a cover....and get exposed to wet weather on a regular basis...then corrosion of just about any nut and bolt is an issue (along with corrosion of the aluminum parts and wiring connectors).  I would bet that most of the exhaust stud issues are on bikes that most likely have never had the header off in their lifetime.

If you take the bolts out every few years (when you are checking your tensioner) and then reapply never-seize on the threads when you put it back together....I bet you will never have an issue.

But...if it makes you feel better....there is not reason you couldn't but studs in place of the bolts.

All 3 links lead to the same generic page. I hate webpages that do that!

I've put anti-seize on these bolts every time they come out. I love this stuff!

Kris,

Look at the number at the end of each link, and then when you get to the webpage reference that number to one of the products shown on the page.

Art,

It works when I click on the links.

Read through the page and you will be able to figure out which locknuts will work for the various applications on a motorcycle.
