vent tubes on stock airbox
03/26/15 at 12:33:25

I just became the new owner of a 2001 savage and can't wait for summer Wink. I have a question about the stock airbox. There is 2 vent tubes on the bottom of it one of mine is capped off and the other is just a hose thats ziptied up not connected to anything. I also have the vent tube on top of the head by the spark plug and that is not connected to anything and has no filter on it. what is the proper routing for these hoses? thanks

The zip tied tube that hangs down is a drain line for the air box.....the front part of the air box has a chamber that acts as a chamber for the crankcase vent from the engine.  The vapors go to the front of the air cleaner and the oil and water drain down and flow into that tube....the vapors are burned in the engine.  You are supposed to take the cap off the tube when you do an oil change and drain the chamber.

The vent tube from the top of the engine is supposed to connect to the front of the air cleaner housing....just left of the connection for the carb inlet hose.

Gary:

Wonder why the photo you posted has 2 vent tubes?  Most bikes only have a single tube, and the other one is capped when it comes from the factory.

It's probably from the '86 manual.  I think they originally had 2 tubes.

Even shows an unreinforced intake tube.

I'm "fairly" certain that my '95 donor had two plugged vents at the bottom.
