Dyna mount bolts
03/23/15 at 07:08:17

I not sure what others have used for bolts to mount a Dyna muffler to the stock savage mount. But I found these worked great for my application. Saved me time trying to find bolts that would fit in the narrow Dyna channel.
I didn’t have to grind down bolt heads, or find a way to get a wrench in to hold the bolt head, to make sure I got it tight enough.

I bought (2) each of these, hoping that I could use both to bolt the muffler on. Turns out I only needed one, so I have a spare to go with the other Dyna muffler.

These are HD P/N & they cost me about $5 from the local HD dealer, they are for a 2009 Dyna Super Gilde.

P/N 5445W- Carriage Bolt
P/N 7531- Locknut.

Savvy,

If you could measure the bolt, diameter & length, and post the dimensions chances are a standard carriage bolt from the hardware store might fit.

I am wrong again.

Carriage bolts have too long of a square section and prevents the bolt from tightening down properly.  The carriage bolt head is supposed to grip into the wood - so it is made somewhat deep...and it does not work well in the DYNA muffler.

I do have to say however....that Harley bolt sure looks a lot like the feet on my washing machine!

Chuck the bolt up in a drill, spin, grind away some of the square part.Yeah, now you won't have threads up close, but the muffler tab and the bracket, plus a washer...and buy it long enough to work on, then cut off to fit.

Justin,

I made my second mistake, I thought I was wrong, but I wasn't.

I went to the Harley shop and purchased P/N 5445W- Carriage Bolt.

I then went to the hardware store and purchased a 5/16" x 1 1/4" Carriage Bolt. Lo and behold they are identical in every respect except for a slight difference in the "domed" shape of the head.

Either Carriage Bolt fits the Dyna Muffler perfectly! With no grinding, cutting or re-shaping.

Thank you again for reminding me to "Think Outside Of The Box".

Not all carriage bolts will work.....it just depends on how long the square portion is on the backside of the head (notice how the Harley piece has the backside of the square tapered).  I bought some stainless carriage bolts and the square portion extended back too far....the square would bottom out on the sleeve inside the rubber spacer and the muffler did not get tight when the nut was tightened.  And as Jog suggested...they had to be modified to make them work by grinding away part of the square.

The American made stainless steel carriage bolt that I bought does not have to be modified to fit the Dyna muffler to the S40.
