Sloppy play in gear shifter
03/22/15 at 14:26:18

So I noticed today that there is some sloppy loose play if I shift all the way down to first there is movement down past first.

I know that doesnt sound right but should I look for something bent? loose? there wasnt any play before... dont know what happened

Have you gotten down and visually inspected or is this" observation " just the power of the toe?

Have a look at the rod, is it bent?

The rod,, the rod,  not the shifter lever.
Look at the rod between the transmission and the shift lever. Watch what it does when you pull down on the shifter.

You ever have trouble getting it in gear, sitting at a light, been sitting there, holding the clutch, waiting on the green light, in neutral?

ok so the rod looks like it is bending in toward the engine in a slight bevel. To describe how far it is bent the rod is further in and under the bottom most stator cover screw. And yes there has been times trouble getting into first from neutral, or 2nd to neutral even.

So bend try to bend it back or buy new one? ROD

One end is left-handed, pay attention. That adjusts shifter height.
If you have stomped on the shifter you are probably why it's bent.
How you use the clutch is a big deal. I'll let someone else type all that.

The transmission gears have very square edged pieces that slide together to lock the bike bike in gear.  When moving these pieces easily mesh together and it is easy to shift.  When at a stop, if you hold the clutch lever in too long the input shaft stops turning, the output shaft is already stopped.....and if the square edged "dogs" are not in alignment....the transmission will not shift into gear.  You can either let the clutch out and then pull it in and shift before the input shaft comes to a complete stop - or you can gently rock the bike forward or backward a bit and it will shift.  Stomping is not necessary....and can bend the shaft. Automobile transmissions are different and have gear with synchonizers and tapered teeth.....motorcycles don't.  You have to adapt your riding style and avoid stomping on the pedal.

Working the clutch lever a few times after a long stop gets things lined up, it's a lot like double clutching an older manual tranny in a car. If you can't find them, grind them. Wink

In neutral. Just barely start letting it out and press on the shifter or let it out and pull it in again.. Really, of all the low buck bikes and cheap stuff out there, these things have good transmissions.
I hope you guys aren't sitting between cars,  it's safety meeting time.

I never shift out of gear at a light. I don't care to get rear ended trying to find 1st!
