movement of driven pulley normal? (Read 64 times)

While still jacked up, I noticed that I could move the driven pulley laterally about 1/32" when I was finished. I didn't really check or notice this when I was removing the tire. Is this normal? Unfortunately....the rear pulley hub is a bit weak of a design. The pulley hub rides on a single ball bearing, and the backside where the pulley hub slides into the wheel hub is too loose to provide the needed support. As a result the pulley hub bearing wears pretty quickly and does allow the pulley to "wobble"...you most likely can rock the pulley some. You should not be able to pull the pulley in/out.

You can get aftermarket (Chinese) bearings from the local auto parts or industrial supplier for about $ 8.00, and fitting a new bearing is a good idea if you have a lot of movement.

Another "fix" is to get some rubber carpet runner or floor mat, and cut some rubber spacers to fit between the pulley hub and rubber snubbers to tighten up the play.

The ultimate fix is to find a machinist friend to machine the pulley hub to have a bushing that fits snugly into the wheel hub.

Check it before you drop the wheel to put a tire on. If you replace the tube you can use the old one to cut shims from.. Some wobble is just Gonna be there.. it's not a problem..

I'll put rubber shims in the next time I need to remove the wheel and consider having the machining done next winter when the winter is sucky.
