running then dies
02/22/15 at 13:40:04

My 2001 savage is giving me some problems. I'll first admit that I didnt properly winterize and store my bike as I should have. I live in NJ and its very cold here right now. Its stored in my garage and I would go out once a week to start it up and let her run for a lil bit. Today it started and runs fine for about 15-20 seconds and then it dies. Any help would be greatly appreciated concerning this issue along with a link to proper bike winterization.  Thanks

Don't be afraid of boring these guys with details. Choke?
Twist gas? Details, read some old threads, see the questions,

I would start by charging the battery, and draining the float bowl and see what comes out of it.

Just running a bike occasionally really isn't a good idea - all kinds of moisture builds up in the crankcase and exhaust system if you don't go out a ride it for about 20 minutes and get it all warmed up.  Idling for more than 4-5 minutes is never a good idea, and longer than that is worse.

I am really anal about winter prep.  I get the bike warm with a little ride and then change the oil and filter, wash the bike, dry it off and go for a ride to get all the moisture out of it.  I then drain out the fuel and start the bike and let it run out of fuel.  Then I put a battery tender on it every few weeks until the tender shows the battery is fully charged..I don't leave the tender on all the time.

If your bike is not in a heated garage and is subject to large temperature and humidity swings...it is really important to get the ethanol fuel out of it before you put it in storage.

Battery is good, checked that first. I did drain the bowl and about a tbs of fuel dripped out. I guess ill pull the carb off to check for gunk and clean her out. Can my spark plug be fouled up from sitting?

When spark plugs go bad....they generally don't let the bike start and run for 20 seconds.

First, pull the fuel line and see what flows on Prime.
Before you Ever pull the plug, blow the cavity it sits in clear of crud.
Do the petcock test.

The petcock is good. I dropped the float bowl today and everything is moving freely. Just started playing with carbs a year ago on my miller gen/welder. If and when i do pull the carb off, what should i check? Can the needle be gummed up from sitting gas and moisture? The bike has 15k, should i consider rebuilding the carb while shes off?

Check for clogged jets and passage ways. A good soaking with carb cleaner and some compressed air will do wonders. You might also want to blow out the fuel lines too. Running for 20 seconds indicates some type of fuel restriction.

rubber parts and carb cleaner is a bad mix.
You are seriously in the Cam Chain Service Required mileage.
That has been known to destroy engines.
You're certain that fuel is flowing? You've drained the bowl after putting it on Prime, waiting, switching to Run, ?
Then start, run till it dies, measure the bowl again?
I have forgotten to hook up the gas line and ridden more than 20 seconds..How are you testing the battery?
What are you doing to test the petcock? I'm just seeing suggestions and you say that you've done it, but no real explanations.
Bore us with details..

Tim... did you pull the choke (fuel enrichment)????
Half way? or all the way?
If so, did it bog and did you smell fuel?
Do you have a stock petcock?
Pull the oil fill and smell....does it smell like fuel?

You are telling us you pulled the carb...fuel was good....
Please tell us the steps and mods....
:The petcock works good: does not tell us you followed known procedures.
A "Miller/gen welder" ????  why do we need to know what welder you have? Is that a carb?    Do you not have a stock Mikuni carb?

"I pulled the choke all the way"
"I have a 1850  0()U)(* carburetor"
"I have done the Yamaha petcock mod"
" It only turns over but does not fire"
"It is -20 degrees outside"

Information works wonders...

I pulled off the gas tank and carb today. The previous owner upgraded to the raptor petcock. When I took it off the tank I also pulled off the petcock. When I did, I found one of the filters off of it and rolling around in the tank. Im tempted to just pop the filter back on it, but ill just order a new one. I took the carb apart and started cleaning it with carb/choke cleaner. Also took out the jets and cleaned them to, one looks like it may have had some gunk in it. Im going to take the carb to work tomorrow where i have access to compressed air and use a blow gun to make sure all passages are clear.
