Front Spoke Measurement
02/16/15 at 16:25:35

Can anyone who has removed or replaced the front spokes please tell me how long they are?
Our spoke angle is 53 Degrees I think so I need them measured like in the green area (L2).
I know we have two different lengths so both would be great.

I really need this info because I have ordered a 16 inch rim but silly me cut the original spokes a couple of weeks ago with a angle grinder. Embarrassed

If someone could go out and measure the spoke in their wheel this too would help. Put a tape measure from the raised part in the middle of the front rim not the dimples and measure to the hub where the furthermost point where the spoke pokes through the hub. Like in the green illustrations. Both the long and shorter spokes please. In millimeters please.
I hope this makes sense.

Been crunching some numbers and worked out that our front spokes are 18 spokes at 196mm and 18 spokes at 200mm.  Wink
Feel free to correct me if Im wrong.

Isnt their two different lengths?
And are you measuring to the top ridge or the dimple where the spoke comes out?

both sides appear to be the same length.
measured from the center of the visible head to the edge of the rim.

Oh OK thanks for that but that has thrown a small fly in the ointment. Your measurement will be more accurate because you are measuring a actual spoke where as I am centering the hub into the rim without spokes.

I ordered front spokes for an 18" Excel rim from Buchanan's.  The order form shows the spokes are the same 7-15/16" length (201.6mm), and the bend angle is 70 degrees - however the length of the bend is not the same.

The first set of spokes they sent me had the bend identical on all 36 spokes, and the result is that the spokes that go behind and cross over the other spokes would push the flared end of the spoke out and it would not seat properly in the hub.

I worked with Buchanan's and we got the spokes bent at the correct angles, and it now works fine (The stock spokes for the 19" wheel have the spokes with the long and short bends).  You need 18 spokes with the long bend, and 18 spoke with the short bend - the long bend crosses over top of the short bend spokes.

I have no idea how to calculate the length you need for a wheel other than 18" diameter.

Dave does the Excel rim have a raised middle on the rim and how high is it? Is that where you measured from?

And Dave where did you measure the length from? In the diagram did you use the Green illustration or the Blue?
Because the bend is 70 can you remeasure using the Blue please. I will be able to calculate the difference for a 16 rim.

I have no idea what is green or blue....the diagram does not open on my computer.  And I did not measure anything....I listed the length that is shown on my invoice from Buchanan's.  I do have a new spoke set for an 18" wheel at home....I can take some photos and measurements of those spokes.

Here is the photo of the Excel Rim.
