Cable extensions for 12" mini apes?
02/11/15 at 12:28:46
Looking at putting on a 12" z bar mini ape for my savage.
Where is a good place to find cable extensions (brake/clutch) for the savage, are they universal, or model specific?
Do they make extension for the "on/off" switch? Can I just get longer wiring and DIY it, otherwise I'll probably just mount it at the base of the bars where they meet the clamps.

Scan down the index to this Rubber Side Down Section - there are several discussions going on about handlebars, and the answer to the length question may be in one of those.
The early Buckhorn handlebars had the longest cables, later drag bar bikes had shorter cables. The Savage does not have a lot in common with other bikes - so you will not find much that is universal or made to fit our specific bike.
If your electric wires no longer fit....you will just have to take the wiring harness apart and splice in some longer wires. You can make your own clutch and trottle cables by ordering a kit from Venhill...you have to know how to solder well, and don't use the flux made for copper pipe as it doesn't work on steel. You can also order longer brake hoses from them if you need a longer one.

Lost me at the custom brake lines. I don't mind installing already made lines. Don't mind doing custom electrical either. I have been unable to find the largest handlebar you can fit on these bikes with stock drag bars. (2012)... Will old buckhorns fit? What about 8 inch mini apes from lowbrow customs?

stock buckhorns on top of the drag bar risers might be a tight fit.
buckhorns should fit if you take the risers out.
drag bar cables are shorter than buckhorn cables.

To clarify... In addition to longer cables being needed for taller handlebars, you'll also need a longer front hydraulic brake line to reach from the brake master cylinder to the brake caliper.
You could call HEL and ask them to make a custom steel braided hydraulic front brake line.

Yes I am aware. I have done extensions on multiple bikes. Although on them harleys they have kits everywhere for em. I am leaning towards short risers and the 8 inch bars from low brow customs.

It wasn't clear or obvious when you said, "lost me at custom brake lines".
Good luck.

I remember seeing a thread a while ago stating that buckhorn handlebars will not fit on an S40, the stock cables were too short.
I fit 12" bars before on a Savage that had stock buckhorns

For the taller 12” bars you will need a custom set of cables and brake line, there are no production items like this for the LS650.
I have a set, throttle/clutch/brake, I had made for another customer who backed out on the sale, and I believe these are for a 12” rise. They are a custom made by Barnett. Normal price on the set is $350, I’ll let them go for $200, (thats less than I paid for them wholesale) including shipping in the US.
Do you know the lengths you need for each cable/line with the 12” are mounted ? Do you have the new bars already ?
If you purchase and find they don’t fit your setup( a gentle fitment please)I will refund your payment for the return of them.
