Carb Measurement
02/04/15 at 10:35:12

Stopped by the shop the other day and was talking to the mechanic. Asked about the bike and told him I can't get it up and running and I'd probably end up replacing the carb. He said before I spend money on a replacement, he could borrow one and see if it really is a carb problem. Only thing he needs is the measurement where the carb connects to the head. Been looking all over the internet but can't find it. Does anyone have a measurement for a 2008?

Before you even do that,, let's see about getting you going.
A less than fully charged battery will spin it over nicely, but won't fire it up.

If you're gonna pull the plug, blow dirt and crud out of cavity it sits in first.
Get some starting fluid, squirt a Little down into the airbox.
How does it act?
Have you ever had it running?
How old is the gas?
Are there any mods done?
Year model, miles, tell us all about you and the bike..
We have seen all kindsa stuff, and helping someone get their Savage running and not spending money on unnecessary parts or paying for help is just the norm around here.
If I didn't want mine to start, all I needed to do was twist on the gas...

Unless the jets are clogged from stale fuel or the float is misaligned, it would be odd for a carb to fail so miserably on its own.

An engine needs fuel, air, spark and compression to run. You spark plug will tell you something about all of these conditions.

For example, if the spark plug is wet...you're getting fuel. You can place the plug on the cylinder head (not the plastic covers) and engage the starter. If you see sparks, you've got that covered.

Run the above spark plug tests and get back to us. I bet it's something very simple.

It hasn't been run for a while. It's been sitting since November because it wouldn't start well. It would crank great but would never catch or take forever to finally turn over. Most tests like compression and spark came out good. Have yet to check the clearance; that was up next on the check list but thought I'd get a head start on finding a carb that fit because I have a feeling that the clearance is within tolerances.

What do you think about a worn cam chain that is off just enough to affect starting but not running?

The bike is stock 2008 with ~16.5k miles almost all of which are highway.

Dump the gas, and the carb bowl, Fresh Regular Gas.
Get the battery charged up.
I know, it turns over,, get a volt meter and test the battery voltage, less than 12.3, charge it, if the battery is old, pull it, check the water, haul it,have it tested.
The cam? Extremely unlikely.
Start with basics, fuel, air,spark..
I hope you read every word of every reply..

You ARE due a cam chain check. It's a close decision.. Without knowing what shape it's in, kinda scary. I don't know what you can do,, experience,tools,etc..
Any kinda mechanical experience at all? Cars?

After attempting a start, is the spark plug wet? If not you aren't getting fuel. The likely culprit would be the fuel thingy, not the carb.

Forgot to mention a Raptor petcock replacement. So the petcock is good.

It's difficult to work on the bike because of where I'm living. According to management, I'm not supposed to work on vehicles in the parking lot. However, I do get some time to do some work. Because it's been sitting for a while, I'll dump all the gas and make sure the battery's good.

After reading posts on the cam chain, I feel like I need to at least check it soon. I don't have a lot of mechanical history but I can follow directions pretty well.

For the record, I didn't type "fuel thingy". I mistakenly typed petcock in two words and got auto-corrected.

If your apartment is on the first floor, how wide is the door?

You did plug the vacuum off to the old petcock,, right?

That's one feature I like about the forum, when IU forget the no cussing rule and type a cuss, it just changes the cuss to something else, and I don't get called to the carpet

The length of time it's been sitting, the carb might need to be cleaned
it's not hard to just do a cleaning, if you follow directions well
Still, try the other things suggested here first

Yes, the vacuum holes were plugged.

Unfortunately, I live on the second floor so I have to resort to taking the battery out to charge over night or move the bike close enough to run an extension cord and battery tender out to the bike.

This thing has been sitting for far longer than I'd like. Figured it would be a slow fix but it's been longer than I expected.
