Replacement front axle/spindle

I have to make a longer front axle/spindle to accommodate the wider triples. Can someone please tell me what our stock ones are made of and can I use mild steel as a replacement?

I have no clue.. The answer, if it was my question, would be discovered,,
Knowing what a spindle from a bike with the fork width you have would be
How I'd start. Whatever metal works for big bikes with wide forks should work for you.

I have Google and been given conflicting replies as you do with Google.

I'd look to the axle from the tripples you're using.

Yep, and if it's heavier, there is a clue.
25 mm,, close to an inch?

The deal is, how you gonna handle the difference between the hub and the axle length? Spacers, tight axle, spacers need to fit the axle, not just fill the gap between hub and tubes. That's my best guess, but I would not proceed on just that. I'd talk to someone who builds..

Sorry I meant 25mm longer. Two 12.5mm spacers on each side to take up the slack.

Yeah, 25 mm, about an inch, half per side,, a poorly supported axle can get really bent in a half inch. I stand by my post.. spacers drilled to Fit the axle.
And, get input from more people.

Yep, you need to find the axle that was used with those triple trees, then hope the diameter is the same as the stock wheel....and then the issue becomes how the axle connected to the fork legs.  Our forks have one end threaded, and one end is a shoulder that gets clamped into the fork leg....it is going to be pretty amazing if the axle that goes with those fork yokes actually works.

When you start mixing parts up....it can get really complicated.

Maybe you should consider the new RYCA top fork yoke?  Another option is to find a complete front end that works....and only the steering stem and bearing are a concern....that way all the other fork/wheel/fender/brake parts are made to be used together.

Thanks Dave but why cant I lathe a axle 25mm longer and make bigger spacers. Other people are doing it successfully according to Google.

I don't think you can't, but agree with dave that there will be complications.
as you noted... 'what material', dimensions, hardness, etc.

remember, your nose is at stake, not mine.

What triple trees are you using, maybe someone has one that they can measure and you might be able to use the axle?

Or what length axle do you need?
I have GR/GS front ends that I can measure.

I am doing careful resurch and asking lots of questions regarding which grade steel to use. In layman's terms too mild or too hard steels can cause problems, a happy medium is required. A material that can flex.
The length I need is stock plus 25mm approximately. I will measure it later with forks mounted into donor triples with a more accurate measurement.
