One thing that eludes me is the use of the smilies on this site. Often I click on the desired facial expression only to get a semblance of it - such as :'( what's the trick ?

The box that says "check this if you don't like smilies" is unchecked but the smilies don't show up. I don't think I'll lose any sleep over it though.
