2006 S40?
12/19/14 at 21:28:57

There is a 2006 S40 for sale not far away from me. Just under 7000 miles.  Owner is ask9ing $2200.00. That's about right on what Kelly Blue Book rates it for my zip code(big island of Hawaii near Hilo).

Am I right in that 2006 is the first year for the S40? Anyone know if there were any changes after that year? I'd read here that Suzuki went to a Chinese made cam chain at some point. Would this one have that cam chain? I'm aware of the cam chain tensioner situation. I think, if I buy this, I may buy a new tensioner, and send it of to Mr. Verslavy for the mod, so I can ride while I wait.
I'm a 61 year old long time rider (started off road at 8), and have always liked thumpers. Mine have mostly been dual sports, except for a 2007 Royal Enfield Bullet 500 I rode for 3 years or so.  I've seen a fair number of Savage/S40s here on the island. There is a Suzuki importer in Hilo about 12 miles away. Any other brand, the dealer is in Kona 125 miles each way.

   Here is the craigslist add:

   Thanks for any comments.

Mine's a 97'... and I put a Verslavy tensioner on it...
This has been an issue since day one...

I know of no changes corresponding to the S40 name change....

Other than going to a 5pd... all changes have been minor...
Turn signals, paint, name change, paint, cylinder liner, paint, headlight flash, paint, blinker indicator color, paint...

If it's a clean looking bike, for a good price in your area,... go for it...
Put a Raptor pet, Verslavy adjuster, gel battery, and toss the chrome head covers...
Yer' good to go.... a long ways............

given that taking the long way to the dealer is a 250 mile trip... I wouldn't think who made the chain will be an issue.  Short trips are what will do the chain in.  My commute is 25 miles one way.  I got about 22k miles out of a chain.  I would guess if you rode 10 miles, you'd get about 10k out of a chain.

I do have new parts available so you don't need to ship from HI to me.

With the utmost respect to Serowbot and many others on this forum, there's no need to remove the chrome head covers, unless you have serious aesthetic issues with them.

IDK HOOT about parts availability on the island, but I see no reason to ever stop by the dealership if freight isn't just stupid high.

I'm almost positive Suzuki went from the Savage to the S40 in 2005.

I just looked at the Suzuki Parts list index online.

All years are listed as an LS650.

In the Suzuki online parts list:
For 2004 they show the bike as the "Savage 1996-2004"
For 2005 they show the bike as the "LS650", and they have a separate  parts list for the "LS 650 S40 2005-2006"
For 2006 they show the bike as the "LS650", and they have a separate parts list for the "LS 650 S40 2005-2006"
For 2007 they list the LS650.

I went into the 2005-2006 parts list and I could not find any differences between the two.  Both the LS650 and S40 parts lists showed the S40 badges on the frame covers and had the same parts numbers.  It does appear that 2005 was the first year the S40 badges showed up.  The parts list does stop calling the bike a "SAVAGE" in 2005......2004 was the last year they used the "Savage" name.

For whatever reason.....2005 & 2006 appear to be some kind of transition period, and they have parts lists for both the LS650 and the LS650 S40....even thought the parts appear the same (and they stop using the Savage name?).

Suzuki changed the name of their line of cruisers to "Boulevard" with the sub-designation of S40, C50, C90, etc. in 2005. They dropped the marketing names of "Savage" and "Volusia" etc. This was also the year they switched everything except the S40 to fuel injection.

For what it is worth.

I Much prefer the S40, as it lost the buckhorn type bars and went drag style, and lost the sissy bar.
