oil level

Hey savages

I have a quick question regarding the oil level in my bike..

I changed the oil some days ago, thinking that 1800 ml was what I needed..

I had two cans of oil with 0.940 liter in each

Now I just read in my manual that 1800 ml is needed when not changing the oil filter, and 2400 ml is needed when changing the oil filter..

Isn't going from 1800 to 2400 abit too much? I mean the filter doesn't soak up 600 ml does it?

Anyhow, im wondering, is it safe to start up the bike with aprox. 1850 ml, and check my oil level?

Did you check the oil level window?

The owners handbook states 2 litres with a filter change or 1.8 litres with out. When you look through the window, the oil should be between two little lines at the side of the window. You must have the bike upright to check this, so get a suitable brick or block of wood to put under the stand.

sorry I forgot to mention that I did change my filter too, and then added 1800 ml of oil (two cans of 1 us quart)

that's weird, my suzuki handbook states 2400 ml with new filter

I haven't checked the oil lvl since i added the new oil

if the lvl is between the two lines or above,
would it then be safe to start it up, even when theres only 1800 ml in the engine with a new oil filter?

If you've put 2 qts of the correct oil in and they stayed in, it is safe to start regardless of what it shows in the window.

The oil pickup is low enough that even if you only had 1 qt. it would pick it up, but I would not recommend doing that on purpose.

But I need to buy another bottle then

Great, then I can get it fired up tomorrow

For the record the 2,400ml number is for a complete overhaul...  Verlsagen can you add this to the http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1099572561 thread as the discrepancy hasn't been pointed out there.
