Help me understand- accredited reporters

So I am looking at this story (twice now) about how the media was kept out of Ferguson (at least in the air). Here is the Yahoo/AP news story:

Ok so my question is where is the term "accredited reporter" or carrying "properly accredited news representatives" defined? who is the accreditation entity? How does one get accreditated?

I really really want to know!

...

Hmmm .. I didn't see any exclusion for those you mentioned... just pay the money. they were also extremely vague in how accepts their pass. Shouldn't the White House .. who used the term be responsible for defining the credentials?

"Accreditation", especially among the Police and Military, often means "Invitation" or "Accepted Presence".

Your Newspaper/News Agency has been nice to us and plays by our rules?

Today, "Accreditation", is 100.00 bucks, and a plastic card.

A few years ago, it was a, 'Fedora' hat, with a, carefully lettered card,
which said, "PRESS", in the band, (After JFK, made fedoras not popular),
with a Graflex, with pockets of a tattered suit coat, bulging with flash bulbs and film holders.
You could go ANYWHERE !
