So I finally got an electrical tester. Never used one so I thought I would get advice before using it. So if anyone could tell me where to start and what to do would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry...I'd be better telling you how to use the toy in the background than the tester.

Black to ground red to whatever you're testing.
The battery + terminal will show volts.
don't do that with amps or ohms or you'll be buying a new tester.
Reading the manual should give you the basics.
testing a lightbulb, use ohms between the two terminals.
you'll rarely use Amps.

If you want something more specific, ask.

I don't have a manual cause I had to barrow it. From what I understand using the ohm I disconnect the battery first but does it matter which wire I put where. I'm sure I can figure it out when I do it tomorrow but thought I'd ask you guys first.

ohms gives you a resistance reading
for example

say your testing a switch

you put the red pron on one side of the switch and the black prong on the other side of the switch
now you wont get a beep when the switch is off but as soon as its on itll make a complete connection so the meter will beep, if the meet dosent beep your switch is no good
