Removing Front Pulley

Hi all,

Recently got in a minor low-side accident. I need to replace the belt, which apparently seems to involve removing the front pulley. Few questions:

What size is the nut?

I heard that the washer behind is a locking washer? Mine seems to have been bent at 12 o'clock and 3 o'clock.

This is new grounds for me so any advice would be great! Also if there's a way to change the belt without removing the front pulley, let me hear it!

another way is to put a socket between the pulley and belt and let it rotate to hit the engine casing. the socket should have straight sides and be small enough to nest in the pulley teeth. Around a 1/4" drive, 9mm socket.

I don't have an impact driver, and in this case wouldn't use it.

BTW, unless you're transferring the belt to another engine, leave it be. The engine will come out with it on.

The reason I need to remove the belt is because I lowsided into a bank with gravel. One piece of gravel got lodged between the front sprocket and the belt, punching a hole into the belt..

I've got several of those - you don't need to replace the belt just because there's a piece of gravel through it. I know I've run for at least 10,000 miles with gravel pushed thru the belt, probably more.

pry the gravel out and run it

(I'm talking about pea-sized or a little bigger- If you mean "2b" or something - that might be a different story )

2007 s40 -stock -white spacer out -repaired to rideable condition!

The bends in that washer are what locks the nut in place.... you'll need to tap the washer flat before removing the nut...
Use a chisel or sharp flat-blade screwdriver and a hammer...
Once the washer is flattened... you can remove the nut...

I used to use a ratcheting tiedown strap to secure the rear wheel to my carport 4'4" support post... that held the bike up, and stopped the wheel...
Now I just use an electric impact wrench...

....but, as runwy said,... a small gravel pit won't hurt the belt... Marble size or smaller is probably okay...
