I have been changing the oil, and at the same time I took a look at the cam chain adjuster to see where it's at.. It sticks out 17 mm, maybe between 17 and 18 even, so im guessing it would be the best choice to make the adjuster mod now..??? The bike has 16000 km. on the clock, isn't it a little too soon that it sticks out this much?

16000km=10000miles, early, but not unusual.

I was thinking, if you were to make the adjuster mod before the max of 18+ mm was reached, would that make the chain too tight? Im wondering how much it sticks out on a brand new engine, and if it's possible to make it too tight when doing the mod.

Yes it's possible, but as long as the plunger expands when released from full compression, you're within the limits.

would you recomend doing the mod now at 17, almost 18?
Or wait alittle longer..?

When taking off the adjuster and letting the chain slack, is there any chance it will jump a tooth and go out of timing?

Ok - I decided to wait to make the adjuster mod.. It looks like I made a wrong measurement the first time, the plunger is only at 16-17 mm's out. Used a zip tie on the chain before removing the adjuster.. Just for the record, I didn't have any problems taking off the clutch cover without removing the footpeg bracket, just tilted the top of the cover towards myself, and then the bottom slid right out.

I cleaned up the oil leak, but I didn't seal the nut.. Instead of using gasket sealant, I'll look and see if I can find a copper seal washer..

It was very exciting to have a look inside for the first time on this bike, here's some pics :

I think the original leak/weeping is what I have. Only shows up on the left side, and comes after I ride and then let it sit on the side stand.
People mention using RTV to help seal it, but (being the newbie) I'm not sure which product I need to get. Any experienced savages out there have strrong suggestions?
