Bike gets oily after a few rides... Oil Exhaust?
10/08/14 at 05:49:42

Hey guys, I'm a total newbie when it comes to bikes, so this question is probably pretty dumb but here goes...

I bought an '01 savage with the airbox removed/cone filter mod. My issue is - every time I ride, the back of my bike gets pretty grimy with what I assume is oil exhaust.

I'm wondering if this the price you pay for the airbox mod? Or a sign of a bigger issue?

Thanks!

Where does that rubber tube on the top right side of the engine go now?

That is the engine breather, and depending on the condition of the engine, and the speeds you are riding - there could be a lot of oil spray coming out of that tube.  If you are riding on the interstate at 70-80 mph....the engine does use oil.  Also if someone had the engine apart and did not put the stainless screen back in the head - the engine blows more oil out than it should.

I believe the tube goes about halfway down the frame. Could I relocate it further down?

I've never had the head apart, so I can't speak to that.

I have been doing some interstate riding. I just want to confirm I'm not ignoring some major issue...

If that crankcase breather tube no longer goes into the airbox,.. it should have a filter on it...

YEAH,needs a filter and, when it exits the head,if it runs uphill a ways that gives droplets a chance to glom onto each other and drip back into the engine.
