Well to my surprise...I have a modified tensioner in it already.Looks like the front guide got twisted or put in crooked. So looks like I gotta pull the head cover now.Might be for the best anyway.Somebody else was in it already and goobed it up with red permatex everywhere.

Ok...Question.I've searched and been reading the manual. What holds the front camchain guide in place?
Don't want to pull the headcover off unless absolutely necessary.

The head, it fits into a slot in the cylinder and case.

Front guide was put in upside down. And just set in,not inplace or anything.Gettin' kinda lucky on this rebuild, that nothing is damaged.Couple Heli-coils later.Time to start assembly the correct way.Lucked out and still had a gasket kit too. With a new head gasket.

Still has a knock to it.Sounds like top end.Thinkin' maybe piston slap. When I had the head off,it all looked good. Angry

Ok...Any suggestions???????Almost 14,000 miles. Not too bad at idle. When you rev it or it's under load is when it's noisy.
I've adjusted the valves.Fixed the upside down timing chain guide.Has a modified tensioner already.
Sounds like a rod knock in a car.
Seems to be around the right front of the head.Listening with a wooden dowel.
Piston and valves looked ok with the head off.
Cam and rockers are not worn.

Sorry Demin I have no help to offer, I haven't had the pleasure of tearing into an LS650 engine as of yet.

I had an '88 that knocked, turned out to be a burnt piston.

My guess is piston slap.
It's a big piston, with a short, tight skirt.
excuse me what were we talking about?   Huh

I got the inspection for the salvage title done this morning.I think I'm going to tear it back done and start again.I'll pull the cylinder and all this time.
Thanx anyways Toes.At least I know somebody is reading my thread.

Thanx again Verslagen.I knew you would have an answer.Just second guessing myself,I guess. Undecided

Ok..Getting ready to tear the top end back down.Presuming it's piston slap.I see Wiseco makes a pistons.I just looked it up $200.00  Shocked  for 1 piston??????Holy crap. They are out of the 95mm.
I've read some on here about this...How big can I go on a stock cylinder?I read about getting it hardened or something,do I need to do this.I'm not going for performance, just a rebuild.
And is Wiseco the only company for a piston?

Found some for as low as $135.00 shipped.

Time to tear down.

Wiseco makes the 95mm and the 96mm....they actually are DR650 pistons that just happen to work in the LS660.  Woessner makes a 97mm.

All of the pistons require boring the cylinder...as the stock LS650 bore is 94mm.
