Doesn't take much anymore to total anything.
Handlebars, mastercylinder, couple turn signals, tool box cover,Right footpeg and maybe the mount.Fender is scratched.Maybe scratches on the exhaust..etc.
Just looked.Front fender $172.00
Turn signal 60,peg 40,bars 87...Stupid money to replace stock parts,And that's prices from Ron Ayers.
The screwed up part on bikes is they don't just repaint a fender. They replace it with a new one already color matched.

My buddy dropped his 1100 Shadow, put a dent in the gas tank.Thought about turning it in on his insurance.Guy said they would've totaled the bike.Over $1,000.00 for the gas tank, plus the emblems and stuff.

I just looked up the Blue Book value, and if the 98 bike was in excellent condition the Retail Value is $ 1,435....Trade In is $ 920.  So, if you have a $ 1,000 deductible - it is not going to cost the Insurance Company much of anything if they just "Total It"......it is not worth their time to even consider having it repaired.

The fact that it has a "salvage" title doesn't mean it was not repairable....it just means it wasn't economically in the best interest of the insurance agency.

We have a place near here called Racersedge411 that offers up bikes that are either crashed or theft recoveries.  Often the bikes with Salvage titles are completely functional and very nice bikes - I guess they might be Theft Recoveries.....or for some other reason they were written off?  I don't mean to post something Off Topic.....but look at the bikes they have an sometimes you can't understand why a bike has a Salvage title.

Exactly.I do salvage cars and bikes all the time.Usually when an insurance company writes an estimate,it's all new parts.
The gas tank is dinged up.A new one through Ron Ayers 436 bucks, plus the decals.Doesn't take much.I can either put a used tank on it or fix this one.I will probably fix it.Dings aren't that bad.A little bondo will fix it right up.
