Amongst some minor stuff it needs a couple of major parts. New gearbox and clutch. Any help would be appreciated. I'm UK based so trouble finding parts here.

You don't have that many choices. You will probably have to web search as many UK motorcycle wreckers as you possibly can. You can check the market place section of the forum. It must be pointed out that some sellers will be reluctant to ship outside USA and Canada and you will have to factor in shipping. Another alternative is to search USA based motorcycle wreckers, particularly on the east coast. You shouldn't have to pay too much for a complete engine and gearbox, which may well be the way to go. Professional wreckers will probably be better geared to accept international payments rather than individuals, and will also have shipping contacts. People here may be able to help you work out the weight of an engine and gearbox, and you can work on dimensions.

. An engine swap would be a big job but doable. For me though, the big single is part of the charm of the bike. I've actually measured up to see if the Savage engine would fit mt Enfield C GT frame. Yes it will. And would turn that bike into a ton up machine I think. Great engine. Seems to be plenty of Savage stuff available in the states, it's just the insanely expensive shipping from US to consider. Good luck mate.

The gear box and clutch are the least likely parts to go south on ya.
Since you've got the stator cover off, perhaps you mean starter clutch and maybe the case? Because on pre '95 models (we don't have '89 thru '94 in the states) don't have a starter torque limiter and can bust teeth and blow out the bosses on the case.

Is that about right?

There is a LS400 that's a direct swap. Don't know if it's available in UK though.

A 4 speed wire harness is different than a 5 speed harness and they are not interchangable.

In most cases, all you have to do is swap the rotor.
there is a change in where the TDC indicator is between new and old that'll throw off the timing.
The stator wiring should be the same.

That right there is a Nugget! How would a fella go about compensating for that? Is it just the mark,, hmm,, I thot the mark was on the crank and the other one a groove in the aluminum side cover,, Howzat work Versy?

This may or may not have the horsepower of the S40/Savage engine. Go to www.trademe.co.nz and type reference 792611126 into the search bar. This proves it can be done? Note the chain conversion. Don't ask me how or why it was done.
