Microsoft forced windows 8.1 onto my laptop
09/17/14 at 08:31:11

So i'm sitting here mad as hell, while windows 8.1 is being forcefed onto my laptop...
How is that possible, I have always told it "no" or "later" when it popped up numerous times.
Today it gave me a choice of "now" or in "1,2,3 or 4 hour", when I turned off my machine with the power button to clear it (because it would not let me close it), it booted up with a "will you allow microsoft to run blah blah installer" I told it "cancel" , but a notification at the top right that 8.1 was installing.
Can I sue microsoft??  or do they have the right to force feed my machine the upgrades now?
I bought it with windows 8 because I wanted version 8, not 8.1 or 9!

GRRRRRR.... Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry

I had to switch to chrome to post...but it did not matter, its installing in the backround.

Get used to it.

Microsoft recently fired a lot of people and they no longer really have the manning to support anything but their most current OS.   They will now try to force you to upgrade to it because it is the only brand of beer they have on tap any more.

Pundits are now saying when Win9 comes out that everyone will be given "upgrade rights" for a period of time for VERY reasonable prices (like $20).

Real goal here is to excuse the "dumping of support" for all of the old OS versions and to force yet another major update churn.

This "accidental' upgrade will happen to you yet again when Win9 comes out.

Now, if Win9 was lighter and faster this might not be a bad thing, but so far the word is that it is "performance neutral"   (ie no real improvements made, just some tweeked screens).

========================

When Threshold comes out it may just be called Windows.    "Windows" will run on your phone, "Windows" will run on your tablet.   "Windows" will run on your laptop/PC.   "Windows" will get weekly updates pushed to it and you may pay a yearly subscription to run "Windows".   If you don't re-up your subscription, the gas man comes by and cuts off your gas on his next routine visit.

Microsoft will eventually get to be a smaller, more proactive company that actually will be competing for your business.   Right now at 10-14% of all devices they have to get their heads on straight or soon they will be 6-8% of all devices.

Well I suppose I can keep shutting it down every five minutes to keep it from loading, but the I will not get anything done.
I'm at the point where I am going to go buy me a solid state External to back up my documents and photos and just load up some mint.
But i'm not sure I can get my World of Warcraft to run on a straight mint system.
Guess its time to do a full load on my little mini laptop and find out, or just email the folks at blizzard and see what they have for me to do.

Blizzard is making noises of going on Steam full bore.

Folks are installing WOW on Steam Mint (Mint forums) by using the "non-Steam" installation that Steam provides inside their system.

A little geeky for my taste ....   Wait a bit for Blizzard to finish up their Steam version.
