Suddenly rich

No, I didn't just get a job as a millionaire or marry one...
but I'm still single if you are   Wink

More or less stock savage except...
sporty muf, desnorkled, no airbox door, raptorcock, stage 1 cam.

After running fine for several months, it's suddenly running rich.
GPM has gone from 2.2 gal's per 100miles to 1.4 per 50   :'(

So I cleaned the carb, found a huge hair ball on top of the float valve screen, but was clean in general.  Readjusted the float height, was .970 now is 1.060".

Had the head cover off last xmas, did not see any cam/rocker wear.

The last uphill speed run was 92 mph vs. 84/88 normal.

The idle jet is stock for an '88, 47.5
Main jet is 152.5
stock white spacer.

Smells super rich on start up, and idles high.
bucks at a constant 1/4 throttle.
runs great at 1/2 to full throttle.

I think my next step is to reduce the main.
But that doesn't do anything for the low end.

Can you think of any reason that the slide may not be dropping all the way down at partial throttle?  If the slide was up just a bit it would allow more fuel to flow out the needle jet - while the butterfly was still controlling the engine speed.

I don't think so, but it is acting similar to when it was sticking up.
Even though the butterfly is closed at idle, when it sticks up you get high rpms.

I am not a carb guru, but,IMO,rejetting is only appropriate after air flow rate or home elevation changes.

Gerbil,maybe?

Actually, making sure nothing has changed, nothing restricting the air in or out,,,couldn't be a bad idea. How old is the muffler?
But to believe that the carb suddenly needs different jets after it's been in service and doing a good job? I can't wrap my head around that..
I don't know what it IS,but I can't see it suddenly needing  re-tuned like would be needed if you changed the muffler to a lot smaller one.

I'm with JOG... changing jetting while this problem is happening may correct for the problem rather then fix it...

All that said,IF you just can't figure out what is causing the rich condition, and knowing your abilities to get in and out of the carb, there's no reason to waste gas while you try to get it back to the way it was. It's only gonna take you a few minutes to swap the jets out,but I would not be calling it fixed. Sumpin jus ain't right here...

I dropped the main down to 150 last night.
I don't have a smaller pilot jet.
Top end is fine, bottom is still rich, constant 1/4 throttle is still bucky.
