Clean Jets?
09/08/14 at 18:22:30

I woke up my bike after sitting for 3 months during the summer. I had treated the gas. It will start and idle but won't take any throttle (bogs down and dies). This happened the last time it sat for several months over the winter. The shop picked it up and: 'removed float bowl and cleaned jets'.

My questions are:

1. Is this resonable to do without removing the carb?
2. If so, how do 'clean' the jets? Remove them? Shoot some carb cleaner?

Thanks in advance.

You can drop the float bowl with the carb still mounted, and you can then remove the jets and clean them.  The Main Jet sits lower then the pilot jet and is likely to get plugged up when the bike sits and the fuel evaporates and leaves gunk behind.  With a plugged main jet....the engine will not get fuel when the slide tries to open.

Sounds like they did what they needed to do.

Thanks Dave. I'll give it a go. Would you recommend draining the gas out of the bowl and or tank if the bike is going to sit for several months?

Absolutely.  I am anal about it.

I have a Raptor Manual petcock, and on my way home I shut the fuel off at the intersection about a mile from my house.  By the time I hit the end of my driveway the bike has run out of fuel, and I just coast down the driveway and park the bike without any fuel in the carb.  If for some reason I don't ride my bike for a week, or two....or a month....there is not any fuel decomposing in the float bowl and gumming things up.

Dave, you mention the bowl can be removed without taking the carbs out....I'm having trouble with the rear screws.  The battery box is interfering with the screwdriver handle.  Any suggestions?  Should I just go looking for a skinnier handled screwdriver?!

Getting the screws out the first time is tough.  I have a small Phillips headed screwdriver that is just a round piece of metal shaped like an allen wrench that I use.  Once you get them out, you need to buy some allen headed screws...then the float bowl removal becomes much easier in the future.

You can take the bat box out, but I see you are trying to save effort.
I take a tie down and run it from the shock mount around the bat box to the lower shock mount and racket it up until you got a little clearance.
makes it easier to drop the bowl too.

Ditch the old gas.Drain the bowl. If that doesn't quite get it,add Seafoam.
