2 stroke oil in gas?
09/08/14 at 16:05:58

In another thread, WD mentioned putting 2 stoke oil in gas to prevent damage from ethanol.  I've seen other people mention similar before.

My experience with 2 stroke gas in a 4 stroke is: One time I filled my mower with chainsaw gas by mistake - decided to try running it that way instead of draining the tank - did not turn out well - ended up draining the tank, spraying out the carb, (I think cleaning or changing plug).

So, what's the deal? Just a lot less oil per gallon?

In the Spring, when I take out, my, ('Left over' 50-1 oil gas),
from the boat, weed whips, chain saws, etc.
(Which was ONLY Non-Oxy gas was used in the mix)
I pour it in to a container.   Then add it to the law mowers,
and  once and a while to the S40.

(Probably/About, 500 OZ gas (NON- OXY), to 16 OZ of, 50-1)

Don't know the exact mix, but I am guessing it is like 1-500 +
(Nothing measured, it is just a,  'pore')
And, ( No empirical proof).

But, it does two things.
1. SAVES that rather expensive gas.
2. Make me, 'feel better'.

Never have had a problem.

But I use only, 'Ash less Oil" for the mix.
even though I could use TCW-3, (Water cooled oil) in the outboard.

Yes, Virginia, their  IS  a  Difference on the Oil you mix with gas,
as to being, (Two Cycle), 'Water Cooled, or 'Air Cooled".

If it Does Not Say, on the Package, is it  "AIR Cooled" .
DO  NOT,  EVER use  it in a,  AIR Cooled, engine.   !!!!!!   EVER.
(well, unless you don't care if they last very long)

If it is, Water cooled Engine,  Then 'Water cooled'  TCW-3, or  Air Cooled oil, is just fine.

Some years ago, their were  group of people, running little 5hp, B&S,
in 'go-carts".    They had, 'tweaked' these little things to get as much as 15 HP.   They ALL, ran,  Ash less, Two Cycle oil, in the Crankcase, (Changing after every race).

Those guys knew a lot more about it than I.
I just watched.

So as to your question, I, 'think', if your are 'above',
a 1-500 ratio,  (With AIR Cooled OIL),
'should', be no problem.    Perhaps a Benefit.

WD's bike is now DOA...  (at last report it was growing strange green substance in the cases)...

Ethanol hasn't hurt my bike in 33k miles... it still runs great, and burns no oil... I don't add anything...

Your choice... Lips Sealed...

Some two stroke oils have stabilizer in them and that can help - but using a fuel stabilizer like Stabil would be a better use of your money.  Your 4 stroke engine does not need any oil in the fuel.

However.....I have on occasion dumped some 2 stroke mix in my lawn mowers when I had a bit left in the can and wanted to empty the can to make room for a full jug of 2 cycle mix before heading out into the woods.  It won't hurt anything at the 50:1 mix that is used with modern 2 stroke oils.....but is sure isn't going to provide any benefit.

By the time I get to the end of the weedeater gallon of gas it's getting old and the weedeater won't run right. I dump it in the lawnmower or 4 wheeler.

Black bike runs fine but is no longer wanted, orange bike is now a target stand since nobody wanted it.

Going back to full grown bikes. Been a member of the Savage community since 1998, I've had enough.

You guys take care.

I will not be back.

My apologies if I offended, WD...

We'd all like to see you remain a member, and what your next bike is... as as an FSO member of long standing...

He didn't say a whole lot,but I always made it a point to read his posts. Never know what he might have to say that I can use. I hope he reconsiders
And realises that he saves many a Newb loads of grief and sometimes, maybe unintentionally, tosses us older guys an idea about how to get something done, maybe not even bike related.
Row,I hope you drop him an E-mail. You can tell him what I said. I'm sure I'm not alone.

Give him some time, he is disgusted with his LS bikes right now so he will sell them all again and then he is going to take a break for a bit.   He knows his posts are appreciated, but he has taken year long breaks in the past and has returned in better spirits.

All of our old timers do this, actually, take them sabbaticals and then return quietly later on.

I'm taking one right now, working on gun stuff and keeping up with the computerish stuff but not riding very much as the legs are acting problematical right now.

Next early summer will be another Mountain Ride and I will plan to go ....
