I bet this is the one from Craigs list that was first listed a month ago.  Hasn't run in years, $650 or best offer?  If I were working I would have bought it myself.

Great find if the price was good - the early Savages had exposed springs on the front forks which I thought were terrific looking.  To bad they now are covered with Gators.

How about some more pictures of the whole bike?

Well bad news, the tops shot, exhaust valve inside the head, resting ontop of the piston

Good news tho, I found a verslavy tensioner inside Smiley

Who needs parts and what parts do you need, pm me!

I'm not sure that is a Verslavy as there is no slot and roll plug in the tensioner body, same principle, but nothing to stop things falling out. It must be conceded that by the time things do fall out the insides of the chain could be meeting each other.

Well.....if the valves are affordable I would be tempted to replace them both.  Whatever caused one to fail.....most likely had some affect on the other one.

Any indication what made it fail?  Doesn't look like is was running lean or got too hot.

The header and muffler are really blue says the bike was running lean..or just idled without being cooled

You think the piston is okay like that?

The cylinder walls have no scratches!

It looks to me like it indents down into the top ring gap. You already have it off and opened up; no sense in not replacing it.

I guess that means I'm no good anymore; I've got 4 more cylinders! '08 Yamaha FJR1300 and still '01 Savage

IF , you can get that ring out of there.... file it till a new one fits, make sure the piston is a true circle and not oblonged there.
But yeah, while you have it off, new valves and piston.... if walls are good, you could rebuild with ease.
Find someone with good piston and exhaust valves...... get it running and resell if you don't want to keep it. Wink Smiley

Not sure of my eyes, but do I detect a crack where the valve has met, or is it just a mark?. If it's not cracked I suppose the groove could be cleaned, but if you don't want to spend on a piston you can only crack test and hope.

You can't use that piston......you need a replacement.

What happened to the head when the valve came off?  The valve head had to be bouncing around in there until the engine stopped moving.
