What are the chrome engine covers made of?

I swear I did try to search but couldn't find an answer. What are the chrome engine covers made of? At first I thought they were aluminum and tested that with a magnet. There is a very slight pull and if it was aluminum there shouldn't be. The reason I ask is I want to cut and weld in a plate on the left one that is cut out for the decomp cable. I am switching to a manual decomp switch and figured I could just slot the cover and be done.

They are an exceedingly low quality pot metal that outgasses for decades and makes the chrome bubble off. Grind the sparkplug side clean and paint it, throw the other one in the trash where it belongs. Engine looks much better as a "reverse Panhead" than it ever will wearing both tins, especially if they are still chromed.

Reply #9 - 08/28/14 at 10:55:28 I've ditched mine cause I also think they suck to look at but have found that a lot more snot gets accumulated in the spark plug cave now. Honestly don't know what suzuki were thinking with that bit of the bike. I'm kinda thinking of chasing down a left side one now (stupido threw the old one in the bin).
