USB charger not charging iPhone 5S

It seems the last owner installed this item:

However, it doesn't seem to charge my iPhone 5S, I get the "This device is not compatible with the iphone etc." error message. The output says it's 2.1A which should be plenty for the iPhone.. Could it be the battery/installation?

You're the victim of Apple's attempts to squeeze out any devices but the ones Apple themselves made. I'm on my third battery case for my iPhone 5. Just about every time Apple updates the OS, it finds yet another device or cable that actually worked fine but that Apple didn't manufacture, and it produces that message. You may still be able to charge the phone while it's turned off, or you can probably charge it if you plug the Apple-made cable into the USB port, rather than using the connector the eBay device supplies. (Seems, from the picture, to have both.)

Unbelievable.. And here I bought a lifeproof case to use my phone as a GPS etc..

The worst part of it is, when you discover an upgrade breaks some hardware compatibility, you can't revert back to the previous version of the OS. I hope someone slaps them with a lawsuit at some point.

If you are plugging into the USB port on your power adapter using the Apple-supplied Lightning cable, and it's not working, then I don't think using an Apple adapter on a micro-USB cable will do you any good. If it were me, I'd try contacting the manufacturer of the gadget and see if they have a workaround or update.

Update for anyone searching for a solution:

I tried using the micro-USB to lightning adaptor, and it seems to have gotten me a little farther. I get a different error message: "This device may not work with..."

Essentially, the charger will still charge the device, but not fast enough if the screen is "always on" which is odd.

I won't be returning the adaptor because it's way too useful to have.

Next project will be to buy a cigarette lighter power cable, and usb adaptor. If that doesn't work, then crappity smack Apple, and I'm trading in my phone for whatever next Gen Android is coming out..

Good idea that, about the cig lighter.... or, go to an apple forum and ask other folks how they worked around it.

This from one post...

Here's the response from AppleCare:

"Due to the Lightning connector being all digital, it won't work with current models of vehicles or other charging stations other than the wall adapter it came with. However, there might be an adapter in the future that will solve that. I will send this to Engineering and see what they come up with for a quicker solution in case they might have a better way of getting this to work."

Same post a little further down...

I ordered the Griffin Powerjolt for iPhone & iPad. I figured if it can charge an iPhone and an iPad, it should be able to charge the 5 with no issues.

And a little further...

My Griffin works with my 06 civic.
