where my gas go?
08/17/14 at 08:00:50

got a 01 with almost 25k on it.  original petcock, white spacer mod, cam tensioner mod, oil plug leak fix.  i fill her up on thursday afternoon.  on the way home saturday i was spitting and sputtering having to pull over and switch to reserve.  now my ride home is only 10 miles.  thats 50 miles i put on it before draining the tank.  its not in the engine or a puddle under the bike, so where my gas go?

You have been a member of this forum for 2 years.....and you still don't know that the stock petcock is troublesome?

Likely your problem is the diaphragm in the stock petcock is failing, and the fuel went down the vacuum tube and into the engine.

Remove the vacuum line, plug both sides, and then switch the petcock to prime.  Then go for a ride and tell us what happens.

make sure that your petcock is in the on position and not the prime position... If its on prime, itll drain the gas out of the tank into the carb and flood the motor with gas, thinning the oil out and causing major headaches.... also, check your airbox for wetness. Good luck!

If that's the case, then you have a problem with either a bad float valve or your float level is too high.  And you'd have the same problem with a raptorcock.  Especially if you never turned it off.

Most likely it's the stock petcock, check the vac line for gas and do the test.

and if that gas is now in your crankcase, best to change your oil before you start it again while you still have a good engine.

The OP says it's not in the engine, so could be something other than the stock petrol tap. My 2c is on the float sticking, or the o ring in the float seat leaking, making it run super rich.  It's happened to me...(tho mine didn't use that crazy amount of fuel).

Yes he did... and that amount of fuel would show up in the crankcase and air filter... no matter the cause...
Pet, float, or seat... Gravity...
All things flow down...If it ain't showing up below... it came off the top...

...and you thought I was kidding about it being in the neighbors mower...

Assuming the facts are as reported... and assuming the bowl drain isn't open... that gas went in a can...

...(anybody else think locking gas caps are retarded?)...
When the fuel line is right there?... Grin...

There's a place down the road,they have a good gate,always locked,there's no fence..makes about as much sense as a locking gas cap and a"no tools required"hose ..

You'd have to be pretty desperate to milk such a  tiny tank . Somebody's balls must be really breaking to mow the lawn.  Cheesy

I believe the bike was spitting and sputtering from gasoline leaking though the petcock diaphragm and flowing directly into the vacuum line.  I still believe he needs to investigate the petcock diaphragm.

Dave, I see your point...  I imagined the spitting/sputtering of running low on gas...
If the problem existed for some miles instead of just seconds,... definitely do the petcock test...

We need to know how long the spit/sputter was happening... Undecided...

the spitting/sputtering lasted all of 2 sec before i could switch to reserve.  where it ran fine all the way home.  checked again, oil level is normal.  fuel didnt go there.  no gas in vacuum tube.  did petcock test and everything ran normal.  i am beginning to believe someone got there lawn mowed for free.

What kind of clamps and fuel line do you have?  Are there grooves in your fuel line?  Do the clamps look like they've been disturbed?  Is your fuel hose on all the way?  I suppose they could've used the carb bowl drain, but that would take forever.
