Free Windows 10  on Microsoft site

Don't get confused, MS couldn't bear to call it Windows 9 because it was so "advanced" so they called it Windows 10 instead -- you can download the preview for free here.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview-coming-soon
http://liliputing.com/2014/08/lilbits-8-15-2014-windows-threshold-preview-com...

============================================

http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-to-deliver-windows-threshold-tech-preview-arou...

OK, all you screwed over XP type people, pay attention to this.

In the next 30 days you will get a chance to load and run Win 9's tech precursor for free.    It is unknown how/if it will roll into the full released version, but then again you may need to do NOTHING to keep on using the tech preview software forever to replace your aged, crapped out XP installation.

What is becoming clear is that MS has to give something to the Chinese people to replace XP and they have to do it for just about free -- or MS gets kicked out of China permanently.

The key thing is to glom on to whatever that may be.

Your alternative is to stay with Linux Mint or Ubuntu and for some of you that isn't really a possible choice.    My wife is counted in that number, she must use a Windows OS for professional reasons.

Win 9 is likely as good as Windows is ever going to get, new, ever again.

Within the next 30 days we have to identify and grab the best deal we can on what MS going to be offering up.

And that will involve all of us keeping an eye open and posting on this thread so everyone can keep up with the ever moving target ......

http://www.cnet.com/news/microsoft-offices-in-china-raided-again-in-antitrust...

China is again cranking up the pressure on MS -- tightening the vice on the "world's largest market kicks you out if you don't cooperate"  fully expecting to get what they want which is a free XP replacement or else ongoing support for XP going way out into the future.

The other side of the vice is the fact MS has already laid off all the XP support people already and shut down the facilities, etc.    "XP support" simply ain't there any more.

All MS can do is geek over a spyware back door free new Win 9 in some sort of free release.

Or else China will kick MS out of the country for good .....

==================================

Is this a realistic credible threat?    Yes.

Officially, China has already disallowed Windows 8 & 8.1 from all governmental machines.   The official governmental OS is now Kylin, a "proprietary" crypto version of Ubuntu built for Chinese Military by Ubuntu -- built specifically to keep the NSA out of their machines.   Kylin is in place and running right now but the encryption levels used in it are causing it to be too slow for a good personal choice as an OS.

Android and Google are a big issue with the Chinese government as well.    Android outmasses all desktop OS instances by 100 to one in China, so you can see the Chinese feel the strong need to do something about that as well.

Twice now the Chinese government has attempted to fork Android into a Closed Source Proprietary mobile tablet and phone OS.   In both cases Android evolved so fast that the OS was out of date within 3 months and was deemed "unusable" within a year.

http://www.engadget.com/2014/01/16/cos-china-operating-system/

So, let's try twisting the arms of the real original software vendors -- if they want to be in our country they must obey our laws -- and our laws now say "no back doors, high level encryption must be available for all Chinese software."

Fact, due to the huge installed base of XP class machines in China, this huge mass of machines simply cannot be discarded.    They need to keep running doing what they are doing right now to keep the infrastructure working.

So, twist MS's arm and make them geek seems to be the way of it now.

BTW, Google saw the writing on the wall and has proactively closed all their Chinese offices and has already made their complete Chinese exit earlier this year -- but this is OK since Android had no banking/utilities infrastructure operating off of it.

Android is still flooding into China from all the device makers, but Google isn't there to get their arm twisted by a suddenly angry and politically active police state Chinese government.

Sorry, nobody to raid or place of business to harass.    MS could do the same thing.

However, be aware that Google no longer controls the Android versions being used in over 30% of the devices sold so far this year in China.   The handset vendors themselves are controlling their own Android forks instead.

Also note that this percentage will go up to  closer to 60% by Christmas time.    Independent Chinese app stores and the Russian app store Yandex are filling in for the Google Play Store and the various basic Google Services, which simply aren't on these phones at all.

HTC is a notable example of this new sea change.  Xiaomi is another.   Both communicate back to Bandu, Google's main Chinese ad competitor for their various ad services and back to their own servers for their cloud based services.

Example of a non-Google android version:   http://liliputing.com/2014/08/xiaomi-launches-miui-6-makes-android-look-like-...

Ruh-ro Microsoft -- China is really kicking over your ant hill pretty durn good right now, aren't they?

http://www.winbeta.org/news/windows-9-trouble-microsoft-make-drastic-changes-...

WARNING:   this is a speculation & rumor site who is speculating on why Win 9 Enterprise just got heavily modified and the development cycle was disrupted/rescheduled.

My speculation on their speculation is that the Enterprise version preview is getting everything removed from it that China doesn't like and it is getting the interface simplified/modified back towards Win 7 per China's demands.

The Enterprise version preview will then be freely dispersed (for China to take and keep) then it will be re-prettied up, repackaged and retail released with the intended rest of MS's "advanced functions" as the USA pay me release.

This allows MS to give China the bribe they absolutely insist upon getting right now, a free XP upgrade that will run on the old Chinese XP installed base that does not have all the objectionable cloud reporting crap in it.

To the rest of us it will just look like a really ugly old retro looking Enterprise demo preview ....

Wink

We all might just want to download us a copy of that really ugly old retro looking Enterprise demo preview while it is available.

New update, same dates, a few more details released.

http://liliputing.com/2014/08/windows-9-threshold-microsoft-removing-start-sc...

This is starting to smell more like an ad campaign for Win 9 rather than a software test release.

What is becoming clear though is the Enterprise Pre-release is going to be totally different than the rest of the Win 9 pre-releases (the China deal).

It is also clear that too many balls are up in the air right now -- and MS does not juggle cleanly or well historically with too many balls in the air at the same time.   Trying to do Threshold and Stream at the same time after letting go all those people is stretching things too far.

http://www.zdnet.com/windows-threshold-and-cadence-how-fast-is-too-fast-70000...

Something always goes slacking in these overloaded people situations, and so far MS has fouled up a whole bunch of service releases and had to pull back 2 months worth of them just recently and patch / replace them on a crash Priority basis.

http://liliputing.com/2014/08/deals-day-8-26-2014.html

Microsoft slashes $100 off of all existing stocks of NEW Win 8.1 products
to move them out in advance of Win 9

Warehouse stocks of older units are being moved out as well.

"The Microsoft Surface 2 features a 10.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display, an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor, and 2GB of RAM. The entry-level model has 32GB of storage. Microsoft also offers a 64GB model which is now priced at $449. A 64GB Surface 2 tablet with support for AT&T 4G LTE  sells for $579.

Both of those prices reflect a new $100 price drop."

OK, could you please tell us where to go and download this Win9 preview ?

I have just recently upgraded a US-spec (keyboards etc.) ACER netbook from Win.VISTA  Tongue to WIN7.

Might as well upgrade it to WIN9 if it works  Smiley

If win9 is supposed to be a possible alternative to xp it would need xp's ram and processor requirements. Most stock xp machines have less than a gig ram and from vista on up requires over a gig of ram to run. If win9 also requires more than a gig then it is worthless as an xp replacement.

System requirements
Windows 8.1
 (same requirements for BingOS)

If you want to run Windows 8.1 on your PC, here's what it takes:

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2 (more info)

RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)

Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver

Will Win 9 or StreamOS have some lighter requirements?

I dunno -- they are putting 2 gigs of systems memory into the HP 14 Mullins powered Stream machine and 32 gig of eMMC hard drive memory so it would seem no lower system requirements for the general USA release stuff at this point in time.

XP machines often had 1 ghz Athelon (or better) chipsets in them and the owners had bumped the memory up from the 512meg level to over a gig at Service Pack 1 -- so jest mebbe you could coax it to run the Enterprise Trial Version of Threshold (if China had indeed properly motivated MS to make it possible to do so).

In a few weeks time we shall see .....

http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/windows-9-accidentally-teased-by-microsoft

"With Microsoft set to hold a launch event for its new Windows OS on September 30, that was pretty much known already. The company will also reportedly distribute a 'Technology Preview' of the OS currently known as Windows Threshold some time in September or October."

Current info seems to say it has all been pushed back for an additional 30 days, thereabouts.

Part of this rescheduling may be HP's delays getting the StreamBook ready (and getting a few actually made up)  since it is a centerpiece of all of this new big Microsoft push-back against the Chromebook wave.

Well, HP's 14" Streambook has been announced now, but at $299 instead of $199, so that certainly isn't the hold up any more.

We still see no evidence of a lighter faster Win 9, just a porky slow one with different start screens and maybe (if we are lucky) some speech input a la Windows Phone Cortana.

Indeed, MS is gong to release the stripped down Enterprise "China Bribe" version at the end of  this month, and then re-release it again with all the bells and whistles added on to it next spring along with the rest of everything else Thresholdy.

This gives everyone a chance to get a copy of the stripped clean desktop version starting in two weeks.

http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-invites-media-to-meet-the-next-version-of-wind...

"It's official: Microsoft has sent out invitations to a September 30 event in San Francisco, where the company is expected to show off an enterprise technology preview of its next version of Windows, codenamed Threshold.

"Join us to hear what's next for Windows and the enterprise," the invitations say.

Threshold, which may or may not ultimately be christened "Windows 9," is expected to be the last major operating system update for Windows. After Threshold, Microsoft is aiming to release smaller updates on a regular schedule, sources have said.

Among the expected features in Threshold, according to sources, are a new mini-Start menu; the removal of the Charms bar; the ability for windowed Metro-Style apps to run on the Desktop; virtual desktops; and possibly inclusion of the Cortana personal digital assistant technology.

Like Windows 8.1 Update (1), Threshold is expected to look and work differently on different types of hardware, based on hardware profiles. Microsoft officials are considering whether to make Threshold free to existing Windows 7 and Windows 8 users, sources have said, as an incentive to get them to upgrade."

Don't get overly excited about the USA release, the Chinese area release may not have any "end date" but your USA release most certainly will have one.

We will have to see if the internet gives us a download site for the "no end date" Chinese version.

Microsoft .....

http://winsupersite.com/windows/coming-soon-threshold-public-preview

  yup, it's a wedding band

Yup, it's coming ..... MS is making no claims for any great progress on any given front.   This way they don't stub their toe quite as badly, as there isn't any great amounts of copious progress to be found here at all.

They are also telling you going in that they are going to a subscription model from now on and that this technical preview and the "Win 9" that comes after it is the transfer medium to get you from where you are now to where they want you be for now on ..... helplessly locked into MS and whatever the heck they want to give you this year for your subscription dollars.

Hey, you get to go be "Apple whupped" without ever getting to bite into that fresh crunchy sweet juicy Apple ever again .....

http://www.techradar.com/us/news/software/operating-systems/microsoft-windows...

Microsoft Windows 9 Technical Preview spotted in the wild.   Minor changes noted.

"A new Task View button on the taskbar will allow you to switch between running apps and will see the introduction of virtual or custom desktops, something Linux and Mac users have had for ages.
Microsoft also introduced a new feedback programme called the Windows Insider Preview Programme, which allows users to get more regular preview builds and provide frequent feedback to Microsoft.
This allows for a more methodical management of user feedback based on top-level choices (major features) and applications (minor ones), thanks to better mechanisms (ability to send screenshots, add text and add more details to existing entries).
Thurrott also confirmed that the Windows Technical Preview won't be available until next month but failed to provide with more details."

Sounds like you have to sign up to give MS a whole bunch of feedback if you are part of the Preview program.    This would be a good thing, if they listened and reacted and changed stuff at a pace other than "glacial dead slow".
