Ripping the engine apart...
08/09/14 at 13:30:23

So, I've gotten fed up and decided to rip apart my engine...

I needed to know where my chain tensioner was at and to see how bad/not bad my head was holding up.

While it's apart, is there anything else I should truly check out?

I have all new gasket set to replace everything
I also plan to paint the engine.

My plan is to slap it back together (I checked tensioner), clean and prep it for paint, paint, replace chain tensioner, pull valves/ cylinder and check those, then re-gasket everything and put it all back together.

You're aware that's it's not the tensioner that fails but the chain stretches?

check you clutch throwout rod... how much does it stick out of the clutch pack?

Dude,

Unless you have close to 40,000 -50,000 miles on that bike it does not need a top end tear down "just to check it" or to "pull the valves/cylinder".

You are seriously wasting money and time chasing butterflies.

Tell us why you think you need a full teardown and let us clue you as to what is really wrong and the easiest/cheapest way to fix it.

Quoted so you can't say no one told you.
You tear your car down if it needs a tune up?
Start ripping heads off if it needs a timing chain?
Fix what needs fixed and Ride that thing..

A compression test would tell you the overall health of the rings, valves, guides, etc. I'd do that before the full tear down, or are you getting a lot of blue smoke?
If it ain't broke don't fix it.
The cam chain and related stuff needs to be looked at though, as others have noted.
