I liked the s40 well enough, but I wanted some easier freeway capability and long distance hauling. The wife let me get a 14 vstrom 650

Well Rix
Hope ya enjoy the SV. I'll bet its a lot of fun too ! It seems to me the bikes we've had make us who we are , and those Savage/S-40's sure are a good building block (don't ya think) ?

I'm not gonna ask how you got JOG's left nut.
I'm just gonna assume you mean that nut on the left side that holds the rear axle in place ... from when JOG was parting out that old savage ...

I'm very glad I had the ls650 versus one of the 250 offerings.

I have done a good bit of reading on that model and it is the finest 650 tourer made today. It is supposed to be extremely comfortable, lots of aftermarket accessories, and lots of good info about it on the web as well. You can't go wrong; although, you'll probably spend a lot more than you are thinking to set it up for extended trips on the super-slab.

Yup.
The luggage and stuff, along with the ergo stuff for long distance will definitely be a bit of a "tuning" thing.

I just can't find words to express how pleased I am that you decided not to get the new bike.

Nice! I'm currently shopping around for an ABS equipped bike, and this one is on my short list. (I ride in the rain a lot).
I'm hoping to find an ABS bike that's also easy to maintain. Am I naive?
I think the SV/Vstrom would probably fall in middle ground between high tech and ease of maintenance.
Have fun!

I was looking at the V-Strom 1K and a shop had a left over at a great price. After speaking with them the out the door price was $2,200 higher than the advertised price. I guess that's why they are called stealerships.

I rode a friends 1,000 V-Strom before I bought my ST1100. He and his wife have taken 5,000 mile trips on it....riding double.
It was a great bike - but my 30" inseam would only let me tippy toe on the ground. It was just too tall for me to be safe on it with luggage and a passenger.
Great bike.....just too tall for me.
Enjoy it.

I was going to go that dealership because they are across the state line and I wouldn't have to pay sales tax. They told me that would be necessary and I'm pretty certain that is not correct as long as you don't take delivery in the state it is bought. After the steep set-up, delivery, document fees, and then sales bogus sales tax, I passed.
Their are lot's of other places to find a good deal.

Actually, you don't pay just the selling state's sales tax, but at least a portion of your own state's as well... if the state where purchased has a lower sales tax rate than your home state, your home state will demand the difference be paid upon registration.
When we licensed a car bought years before in WA after moving back to TN, the state got it's .14% difference before we could get the tag and tab...
And when I bought the 03 in MS this year, I had to pay the entire sales tax rate, since the bike was purchased from a private party...

I remember a few years ago when a friend of mine from Maine came across the border to buy a car in N.H. because we have no sales tax. I told him that he would have to pay the Maine sales tax when he wanted to register it but he didn't think I knew what I was talking about. Well, when he went to register it, they wanted $1200.00 plus registration fees(which he didn't have). The car sat in his yard unregistered for 2 months and he said that if he couldn't register it, then he wasn't gonna make the payments and it got repossessed. He blamed the dealer for not telling him about the sales tax.
